The Orillia Rowing Club is seeking to hire a candidate aged 15 - 30 (as per Canada Summer Jobs Grant criteria) to fulfil the duty of Boathouse Coordinator. Under the direction of Club board, the successful candidate will support Club activities & provide safety boat coverage & possible coaching for Club members during scheduled on-the-water rowing sessions.
Duties:
- Coordinate operation of the Boathouse during scheduled rowing times. Based on wind & weather conditions, decide if it is safe for rowers to be on the water. Oversee safety of all rowers on & off water.
- Operate safety boat during all on-water rowing sessions; maintain gas & oil supplies for safety boats.
- Ensure all rowers follow club safety procedures, proper equipment handling & storage procedures.
- Decide & communicate to all rowers & crews which boats they shall row in, based on ability & conditions.
- Conduct boathouse opening duties at the beginning of a shift & perform all required duties to ensure a secure boathouse at the end of the shift. Keep the boathouse clean & tidy.
- Post & promote weekly on-water rowing tips for rowers to focus on, in conjunction with coaches.
- Help facilitate programming, such as: Youth Rowing, Learn-to-Row & any other club programs.
- Oversee condition of all equipment & ensure concerns are directed to Club member responsible.
- Lead & coach erging sessions at the boathouse when rowers can`t go on the water to row.
- Assist with planning / running of Club events in consultation with event coordinators.
- Assist with Club communication: club emails, manage What’s App weekly rowing sign up, keep boathouse message boards current & appealing; ensure club rowers know rowing schedule; respond to or forward to Club Board queries from members & family members, potential new members, etc.
Qualifications:
- Unlimited enthusiasm & ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Rowing experience preferred; desire to learn & become a rowing coach an asset
- Preference given to those who have taken the RCA Learn-to-Row Coach course
- Rowing Essentials module, Coach Initiation in Sport module and Making Ethical Decisions module – virtual courses through coachesontario.ca (preferred but not required)
- Current Boat Operators Licence & confidence in driving a motor boat
- Strong leadership skills as well as strong communication & organizational abilities
- Current (last 6 months) Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (18+ only)
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR C certifications or in process of obtaining certifications
Hours and Terms of Work:
Contract term is 14 weeks consecutive weeks in May through August for 30 hr/wk. Hours are morning & evenings Mon. through Fri. and Sat/Sun mornings. Schedule to be finalized with successful candidate. Training & orientation is provided. Hourly rate: $22 dependant on rowing experience/knowledge
