ROLE
The Apprentice Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic is responsible for repairing, troubleshooting, adjusting, overhauling and maintaining mobile heavy-duty equipment under supervision.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fabricate, construct, install, and repair equipment and machinery.
- Diagnose equipment problems and determine required repairs.
- Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
- Repair, overhaul, maintain, and service heavy trucks and heavy construction equipment.
- Repair, overhaul, maintain and service fuel injection systems, exhaust systems, cooling systems, air conditioning systems, lubrication systems, engine control systems, major internal engine repairs or overhaul, installation and alignment of engines and machinery.
- Repair, overhaul, maintain and service drive trains and final drives, hydraulic transmissions, power take-offs, tracked vehicle suspensions and steering, vehicle brake systems, wheel-mounted vehicle suspension and steering.
- Troubleshoot and inspect equipment to detect faults and malfunctions.
- Follow all instructions provided by the direct supervisor and Journeyperson to ensure quality and efficient work.
- Perform equipment cleaning and maintenance as required.
- Accurately document all repairs and demonstrate strong organizational skills.
Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
- Must be working towards completion of the Journeyperson Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic Certification.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Experience
- Previous work experience around heavy-duty equipment would be an asset.
Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of truck and equipment safety.
- Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.
- Knowledge of operation of various pieces of heavy equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude and interest.
- Proficiency with using an iPad is considered an asset.
- Must supply personal tools necessary for the role.
- This is a shop-based position, and a mechanic truck is not required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is based at our Spruce Grove yard. Must be able to work 5 – 6 days/week, 8 – 10 hours/day.

The Apprentice Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic reports to the Journeyperson Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic.
