About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 70+ year-old gentleman living in Markham with his wife. He has been diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a condition similar to dementia and Alzheimer's. He experiences constant dizziness, progressive loss of motor control, and is prone to falls. His speech is becoming affected, though still manageable. He uses a cane for mobility but is not fully stable and requires hands-on support when walking. His wife is the primary caregiver and needs relief to run errands and have time for herself, as it's difficult for her to take him out safely on her own.
Responsibilities:
- Provide mobility assistance and transfer support, including helping him up and down stairs safely
- Take him for walks outdoors while providing physical support and supervision
- Work through prescribed exercises with him to maintain muscle function and mobility
- Keep him physically and mentally active and engaged throughout visits
- Provide cognitive supervision for safety, as he may wander or need redirection
- Light tidying around the house as needed (the couple is generally tidy)
- Occasional errands such as picking up groceries or medications (mileage reimbursed)
- Communicate clearly with family about observations and any changes in condition
What We're Looking For:
- Experience with PSP, dementia, Parkinson's, or similar progressive neurological conditions
- Strong mobility and transfer assistance skills
- Ability to speak English, Gujarati, or Hindi (client is more comfortable with his native language)
- Patient, calm, and positive demeanor
- Reliable and consistent
- Takes initiative and communicates proactively
- Comfortable with physical activity and exercise support
- Respectful of client independence while ensuring safety
- Understanding that this is the family's first time receiving professional care
Schedule:
Tuesday and Thursday, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (6 hours per week). Start date is flexible, planned for late June 2026. The family is considering a three-month commitment initially to establish consistency and routine.
Additional Information:
The client is under the care of a neurology team. The caregiver will receive detailed exercise instructions from the family. This role focuses on keeping the client active, safe, and engaged while providing his wife with much-needed respite. The family lives in a residential area near Warden and Sixteenth Avenue in Markham. The son lives in Florida and is involved in care coordination remotely, with plans to visit during the initial trial period.
