The Education Program in Anatomy is proud to support the health sciences programs within the Faculty of Health Sciences. As part of Education Services, the department provides teaching and learning to students in the following programs: Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, Honours Health Sciences Program, Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences, Midwifery, Physician Assistant Education Program, School of Nursing, and the School of Rehabilitation Sciences. The department supports these programs by striving for excellence in everything we do. The Education Program in Anatomy is seeking an Anatomy Laboratory Technician to support faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders in the essential provision of operational excellence.
Job Summary:
Responsible for the preparation and clean up of sessions in the laboratory. Accountable for ensuring the cleanliness of the lab as well as maintaining the condition of resources used as teaching aids. Requires a thorough understanding of established functions, policies, and procedures to ensure that all users comply with anatomy laboratory rules.
Purpose and Key Functions:
- Assist the coordinator with running sessions by attending sessions and responding to requests from faculty members, staff, and learners.
- Review the room booking schedule and other shared online and print material to prepare for session set-up.
- Coordinate and organize resources for sessions to ensure faculty member, staff, and learner needs are met.
- Assist faculty members and staff with the preparation and set-up of the space, resources, and equipment for sessions.
- Prepare for sessions by arranging the required quantity of tables and chairs in the appropriate layout.
- Set out resources required for the session, including but not limited to donors, animal material, instruments, equipment, and audio visual.
- Clean up at the conclusion of each session by cleaning and returning tables, chairs, and equipment to their original configuration or proper location.
- Return resources to proper location at the conclusion of the session. Request additional janitorial services as required.
- Train others in laboratory procedures, session set-up, operation of laboratory equipment, proper handling of anatomical resources, and the use of audio-visual equipment.
- Independently assess the condition of prosected specimens and determine the appropriate method to maintain the specimens, such as wetting or immersion. · Recommend when replacement of prosected specimens is necessary.
- Operate, adjust, and maintain a variety of equipment and instruments.
- Troubleshoot equipment and perform minor repairs.
- Ensure that major repair requests are escalated to the appropriate area or supervisor.
- Assess the need for added resources, equipment, or instruments and provide recommendations on purchasing.
- Manage supplies inventory and ordering. Receive and inspect deliveries of supplies and equipment, and store in the appropriate area.
- Maintain instruments by cleaning, sorting, and storing or arranging for the cleaning of instruments and pick-up.
- Maintain chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals.
- Mix non-analytical chemical solutions based on established formulae.
- Ensure that all laboratory waste is disposed of according to established policies and procedures.
- Write a variety of documents such as procedure manuals, correspondence, and reports.
- Input, maintain, and verify information in a variety of databases and spreadsheets.
Supervision:
- Provides functional guidance to others on an ongoing basis.
Requirements:
- 2-year Community College diploma in a Laboratory Assistant Program or related field.
- Requires 2 years of relevant experience.
Assets:
- Problem-solving skills and resourcefulness.
- Experience working in the Microsoft 365 environment.
- Good communication skills.
- Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
Additional Information:
This position may require you to travel and to work outside of your regular work schedule including evenings and weekends to meet operational demands.
