The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) at the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry, Psychiatric Assessment Nurse Team (PAN) and Stabilization and Transition Clinic at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital is a key in-scope leadership role that supports an integrated and holistic approach to mental health and addiction treatment by facilitating safe, competent, compassionate, ethical, and evidence-informed care. The AHN provides direct support to the Manager in the oversight of a diverse multi-disciplinary team for Adult Inpatient Psychiatry, PAN and STC – ECT nurse, Social Worker and Admin III. The AHN supervises and provides direction and mentorship to multidisciplinary staff with providing exemplary direct care of patients and their families. The AHN has an expert understanding and knowledge of addiction and mental health treatment, strong collaborative and communication skills, and the ability to liaise with other internal, allied, contracted, and community stakeholders to facilitate timely access to services. The AHN communicates clinical concerns or staffing issues to the most appropriate management or leadership team. The AHN is responsible for planning and implementing site development projects in the realm of clinical care, safety planning, and supporting staff and program development. The AHN is responsible for file auditing and ensuring that all policies and procedures are upheld at the site. The AHN is responsible for liaising with Protective Services staff to address concerns that are raised and ensure that the appropriate level of leadership is aware of ongoing situations as required.
As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
At least 5 years’ experience in an Adult Psychiatry nursing role. • At least 3 years’ Charge Nurse experience required.
