JOB SUMMARY:
Progressive Housing Society is a Burnaby based nonprofit that provides housing, mental health support, and homelessness services to vulnerable adults within the community. We are seeking a dedicated and community focused custodian to join our team.
The custodian is responsible for the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of designated facilities. Under the guidance of the Facilities Manager, this role includes routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and ongoing monitoring of building conditions to ensure a well-maintained environment.
EMPLOYEE CATEGORY: Full Time, Permanent
SALARY RANGE: Grid 3 – HEU – Community Subsector
NUMBER OF VACANCIES: 1 (one) vacancy
HOURS OF WORK: Wednesday to Sunday 06:30-14:30
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & TRAINING
· High School Diploma
· Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
· Valid First Aid Certificate
· Valid WHMIS Certificate
· Valid Building Service Worker Certificate
· 6 months experience with cleaning & building maintenance
· OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
· OR other qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work
· Success clearance of criminal record checks

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and overall upkeep of all company buildings. Including hallways, common areas, laundry rooms, offices, and outdoor spaces. Cleaning duties include but are not limited to sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting high-touch surfaces to support a healthy environment in alignment with exposure control protocol.
· Upkeep external areas of company buildings such as entranceways, sidewalks, and parking lots, including seasonal needs such as snow removal and lawn maintenance.
· Performs minor maintenance tasks (e.g., replacing light bulbs, clearing small blockages, tightening fixtures) and coordinates with maintenance staff for larger repairs
· Maintain, organize, and restock inventory of cleaning supplies
· Operate and maintain cleaning equipment and ensure proper safe use of cleaning products in accordance with WHMIS and relevant safety guidelines
· Collect and properly dispose of garbage, hazardous waste, recycling, and compost, ensuring proper disposal and waste areas are clean and accessible
· Identify and report hazards, maintenance issues, or safety concerns promptly
· Complete and maintain related records and documentation such as maintenance logs and incident reports.
· Travel to various organizational housing sites as needed to perform cleaning, maintenance support, and respond to urgent custodial needs, helping maintain consistent service quality across all properties
· Interact respectfully and professionally with residents, staff, and visitors, supporting a positive and inclusive community atmosphere
· Performs other related duties as assigned
