The Team
The Attorney General is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. The Ministry of Attorney General is structured to carry out this mandate under the direction of the Attorney General, and Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Ministry in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. LSB’s clients include all ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public agencies.
Barristers in the Vancouver Group represent the Attorney General of British Columbia and His Majesty the King in right of the Province of British Columbia before various levels of court and administrative tribunals. In addition, solicitors in the Vancouver Group advise ministries across government.
The Role
As a Legal Assistant, you will provide administrative support to legal counsel within the Vancouver Group of the Legal Services Branch by:
- Maintaining a physical and electronic filing system in accordance with the Group’s standards;
- Drafting correspondence, compiling and organizing pleadings and books in proper form pursuant to Practice Directives and Rules that govern the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the British Columbia Court of Appeal, BC Human Rights Tribunal and various other administrative tribunals;
- Managing calendars and BF system for multi legal counsel; and
- Working with a team of legal assistants, paralegals and legal counsel.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent
- Completion of a Legal Office Administrative Assistant program from a recognized institution, or equivalent
- Experience working in a legal environment
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
Preference may be given to candidates with experience with any of the following:
- One or more years of experience working in a legal environment
- One or more years of experience in litigation
- Experience in labour, employment and human rights law
- More experience than the minimum job requirements listed above
