The Construction Health and Safety Advisor will support the National Health and Safety Manager by actively participating in the planning, organizing, and implementation of diverse health and safety initiatives to reinforce Northland's health and safety program while performing multiple tasks that improve team members' health & safety. Your key duties will include:
- Lead and participate in site inspections and FLHA's (Field Level Hazard Assessments) to ensure team members' consistent use of essential safety equipment and to identify and address any hazards associated with equipment, materials, and production processes.
- Audit and investigate health and safety complaints, concerns, incidents, and accidents.
- Initiate enforcement procedures on-site for violations of Company Safety and Procedures policies and government health and safety standards and regulations.
- Organize and participate in site safety meetings and weekly toolbox meetings, ensuring the signatures of all participants.
- Anticipate and identify potentially unsafe conditions through participation in weekly meetings and develop safety measures/strategies in advance.
- Provide frequent project orientations, consultation, and training programs to ensure all team members are instructed on Northland and government safety standards, procedures, and responsibilities.
- Assist in continuously developing the company's Health and Safety program, including standard operating procedures, policies, and training to mitigate risk, optimize team member health and safety, and foster a positive occupational health and safety culture.
- Communicate, engage, and influence decision-makers and all other team members to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and regulations.
- Proactively maintain site cleanliness through ongoing housekeeping duties each day.
- Coordinate with WCB (Worker's Compensation Board) and other relevant parties for injured team members and facilitate their gradual return to work.
- Address all administrative aspects of site safety, including documenting and completing incident corrective actions, correctly filling out and sending documentation, and storing it appropriately, keeping the Site Superintendent, and Project Manager informed of any deficiencies.
- Ensure timely completion of all coordination activities on-site, including implementing appropriate safety controls during non-routine work hours, such as weekend work.Support the growth and development of company culture.
- Perform other duties as required.
Required qualifications:
- 2 years of working experience in similar roles
- Strong understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulations, and Provincial Safety Standards.
- Possession of a valid Occupational First Aid (OFA) Minimum Level 2 certification.
- Preferred possession of a CEGEP Trade Certificate or equivalent.
- Proficient in setting up new work areas and safety boards.
- Capable of conducting fire extinguisher inspections.
- Equipment & machinery certifications (or willingness to obtain) are desirable.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude, is team-oriented, and actively encourages co-workers, acting as an ambassador for the company.
- Ability to effectively communicate, de-escalate conflict, deliver information and instill core safety values internally and with trade contractors.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work efficiently and independently, while leading by example.
