This Canada Summer Jobs funded initiative will only accept applications from persons who meet the eligibility of the program outlined below. This is a term position for 8-weeks from mid-June to mid-August.
Job Overview
The Community Activation Worker will play a key role in engaging local residents and revitalizing the green space at Metropolitan United Church. This position focuses on building community connections, conducting neighborhood surveys, and developing on-site programs and activities that support well-being, belonging, and positive community use of the church grounds.
This is an ideal opportunity for students in social work, community development, social services, recreation, or related fields who are passionate about grassroots engagement and creative placemaking.
Duties
Community Engagement and Research
- Conduct door-to-door, on-site, and street-level surveys to identify community needs and interests.
- Build rapport with neighborhood residents, community groups, and park users.
- Document observations, trends, and opportunities related to public space usage.
- Provide weekly feedback and insights to the Property Manager and staff team.
Program Design and Activation
- Develop creative, inclusive, and community-driven initiatives for the green space (e.g., pop-up activities, wellness programs, arts-based engagement, informal recreation, social connection opportunities).
- Plan, set up, and deliver programs onsite throughout the summer.
- Ensure programs are safe, welcoming, and accessible to diverse community members.
Site Presence and Stewardship
- Maintain a visible, friendly presence in the green space to encourage positive use.
- Assist with minor setup, takedown, and environmental stewardship of program areas. Help create a sense of safety and community belonging around the site.
Collaboration and Reporting
- Collaborate with church staff, volunteers, and partner agencies where appropriate.
- Track participation numbers and engagement outcomes.
- Prepare end-of-summer summaries of findings and program impact.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in social work, social service work, community development, sociology, psychology, recreation, or a related post-secondary program.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable speaking with diverse individuals.
- Interest in community development, social justice, and inclusive public spaces.
- Ability to work independently, outdoors, and in a dynamic neighborhood environment.
- Creative problem-solving, initiative, and a welcoming presence.
- Previous experience in community engagement, outreach, youth work, or facilitation is an asset but not required.

Applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Have a social insurance number.
Working Conditions
- Primarily outdoors in the green space at Metropolitan United Church.
- Regular interaction with the public.
- Some lifting or physical activity related to program setup may be required.
- Full-time hours for the duration of the summer contract.
