MINIMAL FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- Successful completion of a recognized Phase II Dental Assisting/ Chairside course, including the advanced module.
- Must be registered with the Manitoba Dental Association.
EXPIERENCE:
- 2 years dental assisting experience in a dental office.
- Experience working with insurance forms, billing and collection of patient accounts required.
- Proficiency in patient management software and attention to detail.
- Experience working with medically/physically compromised patients and working with Geriatric clients an asset.
- Experience with intraoral scanning and digital dentistry procedures preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Must be capable of carrying/transporting dental equipment weighing up to 50 lbs is required.
- Must be able to communicate well with staff, students and the public in a pleasant and efficient manner is required.
- Ability to maintain calm professional demeanor during times of high operational tempo and multiple demanding tasks is required.
- Ability to communicate well with others is required.
- Use specialized instruments and equipment is required.
- Reassure patients to help reduce anxiety with dental procedures is required.
- Provide assistance to patients with special needs is required.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records is required.

- A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must hold a valid Manitoba Drivers’ License.
- Must hold a current CPR certificate.
- Excellent attendance and punctuality record required.
- Formal WHMIS training preferred.
Clinical:
- Provides dental assisting services to a dentist, dental hygienist and/or dental students who are involved with the delivery of dental procedures on-site at various CCOH clinics, may include using mobile dental equipment in non-dental clinical settings in various personal care home (PCH) facilities. Patients may be physically, medically and/or economically compromised.
- While on-site in CCOH Clinics, ensure patient chart and laboratory work is available and ensures consent, estimate forms and payment are in order. Fills in patient charts with information from medical chart and/or information from patient. Updates patient charts with changes in medical information. Ensure WRHA Oral Health Program forms (eg. High-risk procedure checklist, consent for silver diamine fluoride, etc.) are used when required.
- Prepares instruments, portable equipment and/or sets up operatories and dental materials for required procedure.
- Ensures the sterilization of necessary instruments and equipment is performed.
- Taking and developing of dental radiographs.
- Maintains inventory of supplies in operatories and mobile vans, at all times
- Arranges for service/repair of dental equipment and/or van when required.
- Performs the following intra-oral procedures in support of dentists and students; placing rubber dams, removing sutures, applying topical anesthetic, desensitizing teeth.
- Liaison with PCH facilities, patient and Legally Acceptable Representative (LAR) (Power of Attorney).
- Works with undergrad dental, dental hygiene and dental assisting students. Making impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts. Trimming and pouring models, if and when required.
- Produce records such as photographs and study models to aid in diagnosis.
- Perform designated laboratory procedures.
- On a weekly basis, responsible for restocking supplies and ensuring all sterilized instruments are put away.
- Weekly maintenance of CCOH Clinics (eg. Cleaning and replenishing consumables in operatories, maintenance of x-ray developer, spore testing sterilizers and sending to Pathology Lab, College of Dentistry)
- Skilled at using digital dentistry technology. Ensures WHMIS binder is kept up to date with current MSDS sheets
- Perform universal IPAC precautions while monitoring and reporting on student, staff and faculty compliance with College IPAC and policies and procedures.
- Position requires providing dental assisting services to CCOH clinic sites, which also includes traveling to Churchill, MB.
Financial/Clerical:
- Complete a variety of online and paper forms including inventory control forms, receipts, order forms, laboratory and X-ray requisition forms, insurance claims and dental charts by entering data, such as dates, times, quantities, and costs.
- Orders dental supplies for CCOH Clinics including, Home Dental Care Program, Deer Lodge Dental Clinic, Churchill Dental Clinic, and St. Amant, using EPIC.
- Maintain and coordinate appointment book schedule for dentists, dental students and/or dental hygienists for CCOH Programs, using the patient management software. Respond to patient and /or LAR telephone queries re: estimates, information about the program and services provided. Also participates in quality activities of the WRHA Oral Health Program (e.g. recording patient no -shows)
- May be required to submit correspondence to appropriate LAR/facilities. Assist office staff with clerical duties (eg. filing, photocopying etc).
- Follows-up with collection of rejected claims and outstanding accounts and accurate completion/follow-up of unpaid/rejected insurance claims (e.g. from CDCP, Non-Insured Health Benefits, EIA etc.).
- Prepares receipts and enters payments for patient accounts into the patient management system.
- Balances and prepares deposits for cashiers’ office and forwards to Main CCOH Bannatyne office weekly.
- Enters patient information and treatment into the patient charts, on insurance claim forms and referral forms. Submits all correspondence as required to appropriate LAR/facilities for all CCOH patients when required.
- Required to obtain knowledge of insurance limitations and prepare proper records for submission and collection of claims/pre-authorizations to/from insurance carriers.
- Responsible to comply with University policies and procedures as well as responsible to comply with PHIA, FIPPA and PCI policies and procedures as it relates to personal and financial information..
- Other related duties as required by the clinical dentists and/or Department Administrator, CCOH Directors or Managing Director.
