The Chef Role
The Rothewood Chef plays an important role in supporting the health, well-being, and daily experience of our students. The Chef is responsible for preparing fresh, nutritious meals and snacks for the children and staff while maintaining a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Rotate the existing approved menu sets on a weekly basis.
- Use the kitchen efficiently and manage time effectively to ensure breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks are prepared and served on schedule.
- Ensure all meals are freshly prepared. Processed foods should not be used.
- Maintain proper documentation for all food kept on site, including ingredient lists, nutrition facts tables, and specification sheets. These records must be available to the Environmental Health Officer upon request.
- Serve whole milk with breakfast and afternoon snack.
- Prepare enough food for all students and staff each day.
- Check the classroom sign-in sheets at the beginning of each shift to confirm the number of students attending school that day.
- Always prepare appropriate vegetarian and/or dairy-free alternatives for children who do not consume meat or dairy.
- Avoid using high amounts of sodium or sugar in food preparation.
- Plan the shopping list in advance to stay organized and ensure all required ingredients are available.
- Keep the kitchen clean, sanitary, and organized at all times. Although cleaners may come in after school hours, it is the Chef’s responsibility to maintain a clean and hygienic workplace throughout the day.

As the Rothewood Chef, you are an important part of the school community. You are expected to dress professionally, maintain good personal hygiene and grooming, and present yourself in a friendly and respectful manner at all times.
Please greet families, students, and team members politely. Families and children enjoy knowing the person who prepares the wonderful meals their child receives each day.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate should have:
- Experience preparing meals for children or in a childcare, school, or commercial kitchen setting.
- Strong understanding of food safety, kitchen hygiene, and allergy awareness.
- Good time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow approved menus and prepare meals consistently.
- A warm, professional, and friendly attitude toward children, families, and staff.
- Food safety certification is required
Pay: $24.00-$26.00 per hour
