Freelance Low-Voltage Installation Technician

Job Overview
ProTek North Solutions is seeking a reliable freelance technician to assist with the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of low-voltage systems.
Projects may take place in residential homes, commercial buildings, offices, and other occupied spaces. The successful contractor must be comfortable working independently, communicating with customers, and completing clean, professional installations.
Responsibilities
- Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain low-voltage systems
- Run, secure, terminate, label, and test low-voltage cabling
- Install security cameras, alarm systems, access control, Wi-Fi equipment, cell boosters, and related devices
- Drill through wood, drywall, masonry, and other common building materials
- Work safely from ladders and in ceilings, basements, crawlspaces, and mechanical areas
- Identify safe and practical cable routes
- Diagnose equipment, cabling, power, and connectivity issues
- Keep work areas clean and minimize damage to finished spaces
- Explain completed work and basic system operation to customers
- Document completed work, materials used, and outstanding issues
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience with low-voltage wiring, construction, electrical work, telecommunications, security systems, or a related trade
- Good understanding of how residential homes and commercial buildings are constructed
- Comfortable drilling holes, fishing wires, using ladders, and working in tight spaces
- Able to use hand tools, power tools, cable testers, and termination tools
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Able to work independently and follow project instructions
- Professional appearance and respectful customer communication
- Dependable, punctual, and attentive to detail
- Must provide all required tools and basic installation equipment
- Must carry valid commercial general liability insurance and provide proof of coverage
- Must have active WSIB coverage and provide a current WSIB clearance certificate
- Must possess a valid Ontario G driver’s licence with a clean driving record
- Must have a reliable personal vehicle capable of safely carrying a 32-foot extension ladder, tools, and required installation equipment
- Must follow all site and workplace safety requirements
Preferred Experience
Experience with any of the following is considered an asset:
- IP and analog security cameras
- Alarm systems and sensors
- Access control systems
- CAT5e, CAT6, coaxial, and other low-voltage cabling
- Residential and commercial Wi-Fi systems
- Cell signal boosters
- Smart-home equipment
- Network racks, patch panels, switches, and wireless access points
Physical Requirements
- Able to lift and carry tools, ladders, equipment, and installation materials
- Able to climb ladders and work at height
- Able to bend, kneel, crouch, and work overhead
- Able to work in basements, attics, crawlspaces, and confined areas when required
- Able to load, unload, and transport equipment safely
Compensation
Compensation will be based on experience and the scope of each project. Work may be paid hourly, daily, or at an agreed project rate.
