Founding Business Development Representative
Manufacturing and Technology Services
SGI Consulting
Location: Hybrid Remote — Toronto, Ontario
Territory: Canada
This Is More Than a Sales Position
SGI Consulting is building its Canadian business development team from the ground up.
We are looking for a small number of ambitious, entrepreneurial professionals who want to join a young company early, help shape its culture, and build a long-term career alongside the organization.
This is not an opportunity to step into a finished sales department, inherit an established territory, or follow a process created years ago.
You will help build the process.
You will help shape the culture.
You will help define what success looks like at SGI.
Opportunities to join a company at this stage do not come around often. The people who join SGI today will have the chance to grow with the company, take on increasing responsibility, and become part of the team that helped build it.
This opportunity will not be right for everyone.
It is intended for someone who sees possibility where others see uncertainty—and who wants the opportunity to create something meaningful.
About SGI Consulting
SGI Consulting helps manufacturers, OEMs, robotics companies, technology companies, and industrial organizations strengthen engineering capacity, accelerate automation projects, and solve complex technical challenges.
Our clients engage SGI when they require experienced support in areas such as:
- Engineering and product development
- Industrial automation and robotics
- Controls engineering and systems integration
- Manufacturing and process optimization
- Artificial intelligence
- Material characterization
- Pilot plant design
- Technology commercialization
- Technical project execution
Many manufacturers operate with lean engineering teams and face delayed projects, limited internal capacity, rising implementation costs, prototype-development bottlenecks, controls-integration challenges, and difficulty accessing specialized expertise.
SGI works alongside internal teams to reduce project risk, improve operational performance, and move technical initiatives forward faster and more effectively.
About the Opportunity
As a Founding Business Development Representative, you will help introduce SGI to manufacturers and technology companies across Canada.
Your initial responsibility will be to identify prospective clients, engage the right decision-makers, uncover technical and operational opportunities, and schedule qualified technical discovery meetings for SGI’s consulting team.
You will speak with engineering managers, plant leaders, operations executives, maintenance professionals, innovation teams, founders, and senior decision-makers.
You are not expected to be an engineer or diagnose complex technical problems yourself.
Your role is to:
- Open the right doors
- Start meaningful conversations
- Ask intelligent questions
- Identify real business and technical challenges
- Recognize buying signals
- Qualify opportunities properly
- Connect the right prospects with SGI’s technical team
- Build relationships that can grow into long-term client accounts
As SGI grows, so can your role.
The people who demonstrate leadership, consistency, sound judgment, and strong results will have the opportunity to help shape future territories, sales processes, training, team structure, and company culture.
What You’ll Do
- Research manufacturers, OEMs, robotics companies, technology firms, and industrial organizations across Canada
- Conduct professional outbound prospecting by phone, email, and LinkedIn
- Connect with engineering, maintenance, operations, automation, innovation, and executive decision-makers
- Identify active and upcoming technical or operational initiatives
- Ask qualification questions and recognize meaningful buying signals
- Determine whether a prospect has a defined project, challenge, business impact, timeline, and openness to outside support
- Schedule qualified technical discovery meetings
- Document why each opportunity should advance to the next stage
- Maintain accurate CRM records, prospect notes, follow-up dates, and opportunity information
- Follow structured communication, qualification, and follow-up processes
- Participate in ongoing service, industry, technical-sales, and business-development training
- Collaborate directly with SGI’s technical analysts, consultants, and leadership team
- Contribute ideas that improve our messaging, culture, systems, and approach
- Help build a repeatable business-development process as the company grows
- Develop relationships that may become long-term accounts and recurring business
What Success Looks Like
Success is not measured only by the number of meetings booked.
A successful Business Development Representative creates qualified opportunities by understanding:
- What the company is working on
- What technical or operational challenge exists
- How the challenge is affecting cost, production, timelines, resources, revenue, or growth
- When the company intends to act
- Whether the company is open to outside technical support
- Who is involved in the decision
Every meeting should have a clear agenda and a strong reason for the prospect to speak with SGI.
You will be expected to take ownership of your activity, follow-up, development, and results.
In return, SGI will provide training, coaching, technical support, access to leadership, and an opportunity to grow beyond the original scope of the position.
A Three-Year Career Path

- Identify technical and operational buying signals
- Qualify potential projects

- Assist with account development
- Take ownership of portions of the sales cycle

You may progress toward:

- Supporting negotiations
- Closing business

Earning ranges are performance targets and are not guaranteed. Actual earnings will depend on individual activity, qualification quality, client revenue, account development, and results.
Who We Want to Meet
We are not trying to attract everyone.
We want to meet candidates who recognize how rare it is to join a growing company early and who are prepared to earn their place within it.
You may be the right person if you:
- Think like an entrepreneur
- Want to help build something from the ground floor
- Are motivated by growth, responsibility, and long-term earning potential
- Want your contribution to be visible
- Are comfortable creating opportunities instead of waiting for them
- Can initiate conversations with senior professionals
- Are competitive without losing professionalism
- Take ownership of your activity and results
- Remain consistent when results take time
- Ask thoughtful questions and listen carefully
- Are coachable but also bring ideas of your own
- Want to help shape the culture of a young company
- Are interested in manufacturing, automation, robotics, engineering, technology, or industrial innovation
- Want more than a routine sales position
Previous experience in business development, appointment setting, B2B sales, recruiting, customer service, SaaS, manufacturing, industrial services, engineering services, automation, or technical markets is considered an asset but is not required.
Mindset, communication ability, discipline, curiosity, and ambition matter just as much.
This Opportunity Is Not for Everyone
This may not be the right position for you if:
- You want to inherit a finished territory and an established client list
- You need every decision and activity mapped out for you
- You are uncomfortable initiating new conversations
- You prefer certainty over opportunity
- You lose motivation when results are not immediate
- You are not comfortable being measured against clear activity and performance expectations
- You want to join a large company where your individual contribution may be difficult to see
- You are looking for an ordinary sales job
SGI is still building.
That means there will be opportunities to contribute, influence, improve, and lead—but it also means we need people who are comfortable taking initiative and helping create the structure around them.
Training and Support
The successful candidate will receive structured onboarding and ongoing coaching covering:
- SGI Consulting’s services and value proposition
- Canadian manufacturing and industrial markets
- Engineering, automation, robotics, and technical-service terminology
- Consultative business-development practices
- Professional cold calling and outbound communication
- Qualification questions and buying signals
- Gatekeeper and decision-maker conversations
- Objection handling
- CRM and pipeline-management practices
- Scheduling qualified technical discovery meetings
- Working with technical analysts and senior leadership
- Long-term client and territory development
Training will incorporate established sales approaches such as consultative selling, SPIN Selling, Challenger principles, objection handling, and industrial-sales techniques.
You will not be expected to sell alone.
Your responsibility is to open the conversation, identify the opportunity, qualify it properly, and connect the prospect with SGI’s technical team. Our analysts, consultants, and leadership team will support the technical discovery, solution development, proposal, and closing process.
Compensation and Career Growth
This position offers a structured, performance-based compensation model with meeting incentives, revenue participation, and increasing earning potential as you develop experience, qualified opportunities, and client relationships.
Compensation is designed to reward:
- Qualified meetings attended by prospects
- New client revenue
- Account growth
- Recurring business
- Long-term territory development
There is no predetermined cap on earnings.
Complete compensation details, performance expectations, and the three-year career model will be discussed during the interview process so candidates can properly assess whether the opportunity aligns with their ambitions.
Why Join SGI Now?
Timing matters.
Joining an established company can provide structure, but joining a young company can provide influence.
The people who join SGI at this stage will have the opportunity to:
- Help shape the business-development culture
- Influence future sales processes and systems
- Work directly with company leadership
- Build a territory from the ground up
- Establish relationships that may remain with them for years
- Earn increasing responsibility as the organization grows
- Potentially become leaders within the team they helped create
- Be recognized for the value they personally contributed
There will only be a limited number of people who can say they joined SGI at the ground floor and helped build what it eventually became.
We are looking for those people now.
Why Do You Think You’re the One?
We want to hear from candidates who believe they have the mindset, resilience, discipline, and ambition required to help build a young company.
When applying, please submit your résumé and answer the following:
Why do you believe you are the right person to join SGI at this stage, and what would you want to help build over the next three years?
Generic responses will not stand out.
Show us how you think.
Show us what motivates you.
Show us why this opportunity should belong to you.
We expect to receive a high volume of applications but will select only a small number of candidates for an initial conversation. Your résumé will tell us where you have worked. Your answers should show us how you think, what you have built, and why you should be one of the people who helps build SGI.
