Job Description:
A heavy-duty cleaner is generally responsible for heavy cleaning work including the cleaning of all hard floor surfaces, the cleaning of all surfaces that must be reached by ladder or scaffolding and the collection and removal of garbage from drop points to a garbage bin or compactor.
Main Responsibilities:
o Dry mops, wet mops (wash/scrub and polishes hard surface floors). The washing/scrubbing of floors is done with manual, or power scrubbing equipment and the polishing is done with handheld or walk behind buffing machines. In large open applications automatic equipment may be used to perform these functions.
o Strips and finishes hard surface floors manually or with power equipment when required.
o Transports garbage from drop points t garbage bins or compactor.
o Cleans glass areas requiring ladders, scaffolding or other extension equipment to reach.
o Cleans washroom floors including washing, stripping and finishing.
o Cleans stairwells and elevator cabs where ladders are required.
o Maintains and carries out preventative maintenance procedures on floor machines, vacuums, automatic scrubbers and buffers and larger self-propelled machines.
o All cleaners are expected to empty the vacuums according to directions and to clean all equipment used at the end of each shift.
Additional Possible Responsibilities:
o Washes walls, ceilings and dusts ceiling light fixtures and ceiling fans at established intervals.
o Uses pile lifting equipment to restore certain types of carpet.
o Erects and dismantles scaffolding as required.
o Shampoos broadloom and uses extracting equipment or clean broadloom.
o Operates machinery such as pressure washers and ride on sweepers and scrubbers in particularly large open areas.
o Cleans and changes fluorescent and incandescent lights.
o Restocks all centrally-dispenses soap systems.
o Will be operating sweeping tools, dry mops up to 32 ounces, buffing machines (electric or battery), ladders, scrubbers (walk behind/ride on scrubbers), pressure washers and carpet extractors.
Qualifications of Incumbent:
o Prior experience as a cleaner, janitor, or in a related role, especially in heavy-duty cleaning, is highly desirable.
o A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred
o Any formal training in the use of cleaning chemicals, machinery, or equipment is a plus.
o Understanding of deep cleaning methods and best practices, including the use of heavy-duty cleaning machinery like floor scrubbers, polishers, or industrial vacuums.
o Strong focus on cleanliness and safety, with an eye for spotting areas that require special attention or deep cleaning.
o Proficiency in using and maintaining heavy-duty cleaning equipment and tools, including buffers, power washers, and chemical cleaners.
o Basic communication skills to follow instructions and report issues to supervisors effectively.
o Knowledge of and ability to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like gloves, masks, and safety goggles when handling chemicals or working in hazardous environments.
o Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, standing for long periods, bending, reaching, and moving heavy items.
o Ability to work efficiently to complete cleaning tasks within assigned time frames, especially during tight schedules.
o Ability to work night shifts, weekends, or irregular hours, as heavy-duty cleaning is often done outside regular business hours.
