MetOcean Telematics Limited (MetOcean) contributes to the worldwide effort to better understand, assess, monitor, and connect our planet.
Our mission is to connect the world without limits. We ensure critical data is transmitted, received, and processed in the fastest and most reliable manner possible anywhere in the world. We value collaboration, innovation, achievement, and connection. We are a growing organization and looking for talented individuals to join our growing team.
About the Role:
We are seeking a full-time Hardware Engineer to join our engineering team.
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will lead the design and development of embedded electronic hardware for products operating in demanding environments. You will be responsible for the complete hardware development lifecycle, from concept and architecture through schematic capture, PCB design layout, prototype bring-up, verification, production support, and sustaining engineering.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will collaborate closely with firmware, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and test engineers and developers to deliver robust, reliable, and manufacturable products.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Design and develop embedded electronic hardware from concept through production and field support.
- Develop system architectures that optimize performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and power consumption.
- Design mixed-signal, analog, and digital circuits using embedded processors and microcontrollers.
- Create and review schematics, component selections, PCB layouts, and technical documentation.
- Perform design analysis, simulations, and validation to ensure product performance and reliability.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Test (DFT) principles to support efficient production.
- Lead hardware integration, bring-up, debugging, verification, and system validation.
- Collaborate with firmware, manufacturing, suppliers, and cross-functional teams throughout product development.
- Support prototype builds, product launches, regulatory compliance, and manufacturing readiness.
- Investigate technical issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions for design and field failures.
- Contribute to project planning, technical risk management, and engineering design reviews.
- Drive continuous improvement of engineering processes, design standards, and product development practices.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Technical and Non-Technical Skills:
- Strong background in analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design.
- Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of PCB layout principles, including signal integrity, grounding, power distribution, thermal management, and EMC.
- Experience designing power supplies, including switching regulators, LDOs, battery-powered systems, and power management circuits.
- Experience with high-speed digital interfaces, including SPI, I²C, UART, USB, Ethernet, CAN, RS-232, and RS-485.
- Experience with RF-enabled embedded systems, including GNSS, satellite communications (e.g., Iridium), antenna selection, RF integration, and wireless performance troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with applicable regulatory standards, including CE, FCC, IEC, UL, RoHS, and REACH.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Innovative, self-motivated, and results-oriented.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience designing embedded electronic hardware.
- Experience designing embedded systems using ARM microcontrollers, DSPs, or similar processors.
- Experience debugging complex hardware.
- Experience performing PCB layout is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with embedded software development in C is considered an asset.
- Experience developing engineering tools or test automation using Python or similar scripting languages is considered an asset.
