A hands-on, code-first QA co-op role. The majority of your work is engineering-focused: writing and maintaining automated tests (Cypress end-to-end and unit tests), expanding test coverage, and improving our testing tooling. When operator bug reports arrive from the field, they take priority - you will reproduce, diagnose, and document these issues so our engineering team can deliver fixes quickly, then return to your automation work. You will collaborate closely with our QA lead against a clear, well-scoped backlog, with mentorship provided throughout, to help ensure reliability across our autonomous retail systems.
Micromart is the Shopify of autonomous retail-enabling entrepreneurs to turn any location into a retail opportunity. Since launching in the US in September 2024, we've quickly grown to 1000+ deployments across the US.
As we grow, this role is critical to ensuring our system remains seamless, secure, and resilient-operating 24/7 with unmatched reliability. We are committed to building the most dependable and intelligent autonomous retail platform, making it effortless for both operators and shoppers.
The Team:
We are a team of multifaceted builders who care deeply about the challenges people face in eating well. We are backed by world-class investors from Toronto, New York, and Silicon Valley. Our talented team of serial entrepreneurs, software engineers, hardware engineers, and operators has previously worked at companies such as Amazon, IBM, and Google.
Technology You'll Be Working With:
QA & Engineering Stack - Cypress and CircleCI for automation, Qase for test case management, LogRocket for session replay and debugging, and Linear for issue tracking. Our codebase is TypeScript throughout, with Node/Express, React, AngularJS, and Postgres.
Smart Store Hardware & IoT - Exposure to the physical systems our software drives, including smart locks, eTags, routers, POS terminals, cameras, edge computers, cooking towers, and displays.
For more information about Micromart, see our website at https://micromart.com
Automation & Development:
Write and maintain Cypress end-to-end and UI tests (TypeScript) for our Platform application, keeping them mapped 1:1 to their corresponding Qase test cases.
Close coverage gaps across key modules (Promotions, Overview, Analytics, Navigation, Pricing) and organize suites into smoke and regression tiers that run in CircleCI.
Add and maintain unit tests for critical backend controllers, jobs, and services (Node/TypeScript). Improve our test tooling and help keep the suite fast, reliable, and easy to work with.
Operator Bug Reports & Triage:
Triage incoming operator bug reports and QA requests.
Reproduce and diagnose issues using application logs and LogRocket session replay to isolate root cause.
Document clear, well-prioritized bug reports in Linear so the engineering team can deliver fixes quickly.
If you find a bug you can fix, go for it, whether that means adjusting a test, correcting an API response, or resolving a configuration issue.
Bonus / Growth Areas:
Help establish frontend performance budgets (Lighthouse CI) and backend load testing (k6). Gain exposure to hardware and integration testing across our kiosk, POS, and vision systems.
How We Work:
Our QA function is AI-augmented: we use Devin to generate manual test plans, scaffold Cypress and unit tests, and cross-reference coverage automatically. Comfort or curiosity working alongside AI tooling is a plus.
You will thrive in this role if you are:
Detail-oriented & investigative: You look for edge cases, reproduce issues carefully, and enjoy trying to break things.
Customer-focused: You think like an operator/end-user to anticipate real-world issues from the field.
Organized & collaborative: You track, prioritize, and communicate issues effectively.
Curious & quick to learn: You're comfortable reading code and digging through logs to understand a problem, and you pick up new tools quickly.
Strong systems thinking: You're curious about how software, hardware, and integrations interact.
Must have:
Pursuing a degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field
Solid computer science fundamentals
Able to read TypeScript / JavaScript and follow web technologies (HTML, JSON, REST)
Basic familiarity with version control (e.g. git)
A methodical, detail-oriented approach to reproducing problems and writing clear, well-documented bug reports
Strong communication and willingness to collaborate across teams
Bonus:
Experience with manual/exploratory and automated testing (Cypress, Playwright, or similar)
Front-end web frameworks such as React, AngularJS
Exposure to databases (Postgres or similar)
Familiarity with CI (CircleCI) or test case management (Qase/TestRail)
Exposure to Linux, Android devices, or IoT
Previous startup experience
