ENGINE TECHNICIAN / HEAVY-DUTY MECHANIC
PAY RANGE: $47/hr to 50/hr

POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced Engine Technician who can accurately diagnose, repair, and rebuild heavy-duty diesel engines. This position requires strong fault-code/electrical diagnostics, mechanical troubleshooting, precision overhaul skills and experience with CAT, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and PACCAR engine platforms. The successful candidate will follow Pro Spec Diesel engine standards and procedures, maintain complete repair documentation, and help mentor developing technicians. This role is suited to a technician who takes ownership, works efficiently, and is committed to completing engine repairs correctly the first time.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- Engine faults are diagnosed accurately using OEM information, scan tools, testing procedures, and sound mechanical judgment.
- Engine repairs and rebuilds are completed according to Pro Spec Diesel standards, OEM specifications, and approved procedures.
- Work is completed efficiently, documented clearly, and verified before the unit is returned to service.
- Developing technicians receive patient, practical mentoring that improves their technical ability and workmanship.
- Customers receive dependable repairs that protect uptime, reduce repeat failures, and build long-term trust.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
- Diagnose active and intermittent engine fault codes on CAT, Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR, and other heavy-duty diesel engines.
- Perform complete engine repairs, in-frame overhauls, out-of-frame rebuilds, component replacement, setup, and final verification.
- Follow Pro Spec Diesel standards for engine disassembly, inspection, measuring, cleaning, documentation, assembly, torque procedures, and quality control.
- Use OEM service information, wiring diagrams, diagnostic software, pressure testing, electrical testing, and mechanical testing to identify root causes.
- Complete accurate technician stories, inspection findings, measurements, photos, parts requirements, and repair recommendations in the shop management system.
- Communicate repair progress, additional findings, parts needs, and delays clearly to the Foreman or Service Manager.
- Protect customer uptime by working with urgency while never sacrificing safety, accuracy, cleanliness, or workmanship.
- Perform post-repair checks, start-up procedures, fluid verification, leak inspections, regeneration or road testing, and final confirmation as required.
- Mentor apprentices and other technicians by explaining diagnostic reasoning, demonstrating correct procedures, and reinforcing company standards.
- Maintain organized tooling, clean engine work areas, properly labelled components, and contamination-control practices throughout each repair.
- Consistently complete company-supplied and OEM training to maintain current knowledge and support long-term technical growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the technician role.
KEY COMPETENCIES
- Advanced diesel engine diagnostic and mechanical troubleshooting ability.
- Strong knowledge of electronic engine controls, fuel systems, air-management systems, emissions systems, lubrication, cooling, and base-engine components.
- Ability to interpret fault codes, schematics, OEM troubleshooting trees, specifications, measurements, and test results.
- Precision-focused workmanship with strong attention to cleanliness, component protection, torque values, and assembly procedures.
- Ability to identify root causes rather than replacing parts without proper testing and verification.
- Organized and disciplined when managing disassembled engines, parts, tooling, measurements, and documentation.
- Clear communication with technicians, leadership, parts staff, and service personnel.
- Willingness and ability to mentor technicians without compromising personal accountability or repair quality.
- Ownership mindset with reliable follow-through and accountability for assigned work.
- Ability to work independently on complex repairs while escalating concerns at the appropriate time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician, Truck and Transport Mechanic, or equivalent recognized trade certification preferred.
- Demonstrated heavy-duty diesel engine experience, including both electronic diagnostics and internal engine repair or rebuilding.
- Experience working with CAT, Cummins, Detroit, and PACCAR engines required; broad experience across multiple platforms is strongly preferred.
- Current or previous OEM or recognized technical certification in at least two of the listed engine platforms required. CAT, Cummins, Detroit, or PACCAR training and certifications.
- Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) certification preferred.
- Valid Class 3 driver’s licence preferred
- Valid driver’s licence and acceptable driving record required.
- Experience using OEM diagnostic software, electronic service information, scan tools, and digital work-order systems preferred.
- Experience with fullbay shop management software

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in tight or awkward positions.
- Ability to stand and work on concrete surfaces for extended periods.
- Capable of working safely under trucks, around running engines, and near heavy equipment.
- Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
- Ability to lift, carry, position, or move heavy components, typically up to 50 lb independently and heavier items with assistance or lifting equipment.
- Tolerance for normal shop conditions, including noise, dust, fumes, oils, diesel fuel, and temperature changes.
- Ability to maintain attention to detail during physically demanding and technically complex work.
- Must be able to wear required PPE, including safety boots, gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection.
