Contribution:

The Supported Child Development Coordinator works in consultation with Supported Child

Development staff, families, Child Care providers, Supported Child Development steering

committee and the Ministry of Children and Family Development within the organizational

structure of the Sea to Sky Community Services Society. They have both a practical and

theoretical understanding of the characteristics of children who require extra support. The

Coordinator should have an understanding of the framework of community services relating

to children and demonstrate flexibility in working outside the defined job responsibilities.

Experience working independently in a consultative position with families and their children

who require extra support as required. The Coordinator provides support to a variety of

childcare settings, to assist staff with inclusive practices. The Coordinator works

collaboratively within the community, participating as a member of a multi disciplinary

team, which sees the family as the pivotal influence in the child’s life. The Supported Child

Development Coordinator’s work reflects the principles of Supported Child Development

Program including: inclusion, family centred care, individual planning, shared responsibility

and community based services.

Qualifications:

1. ECE Certification with advanced Early Child Development Degree; or Inclusive Care

(formally Special Needs) Infant-toddler Certificate or a Social Science degree in

Child Development.

2. Courses or workshops in supporting children with additional needs including

challenging behaviour, guidance and discipline, inclusion, community development,

child development and disabilities.

3. Minimum of four (4) years experience supporting families and including children

requiring extra support in an early childhood setting.

4. A minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience.

5. Demonstrated experience in developing working relationships with a wide range of

professionals, government personnel and members of government (local and

provincial), members of the community and staff.

6. Valid driver’s license.

7. Valid First Aid certificate.

Job skills and abilities:

1. Experience in the delivery of Supported Child Development services.

2. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, facilitation, and problem-

solving skills.

3. Knowledge and experience in developing inclusive programs.

4. Experience and expertise in modifying and adapting activities and programs in

childcare settings.

5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with families, professionals, and

community groups.

6. Computer literacy.

Responsibilities:

A. Direct Service

1. Provide initial intake of children referred to the program.

2. Participate in family home visit as requested by the family.

3. Assist family in gathering information required for referral.

4. Assist family in clarifying of goals for their child.

5. Facilitate or direct Consultant to facilitate and coordinate Support Guide

meeting with family and involved professionals and caregivers to provide plan for

working with child.

6. Determine with the family, the appropriate environment to meet the child’s

individual needs and facilitate placement.

7. Act as liaison between the child care placement, caregivers and parent(s) as

required.

8. Ensure that authorizations and the release of information to the childcare facility

are arranged in a timely manner.

9. Facilitate and chair review meetings, which will include all team members as

required.

10. Facilitate the transition from the Supported Child Development Program to the

school district as directed by family.

11. Coordinate and collaborate with multi-disciplinary team members to design

effective program plans and support to both the parents and the caregivers.

12. Monitor the implementation of the program plan.

13. Observe in the day care of the program plan.

14. Communicate regularly and effectively with the parent(s) and the other support

services.

15. Provide consultative assistance to caregivers/parent(s) re: strategies and

implementation of ideas, problem solving.

16. Assist in evaluation and implementation of appropriate programming changes.

17. Demonstrate understanding and sensitivity of policies and philosophy of

individual centres.

B. Indirect Service:

1. Identify gaps and redundancies in services and supports; develop/provide

supports based on the community access plan and dollars available.

2. Maintain documentation as outlined in the Program Operating Manual.

3. Participate in case Review with Sea to Sky Community Services Society Child

Development team.

4. Maintain an awareness of and working relationship with all community childcare

options.

5. Maintain and update professional skills and knowledge by attending workshops,

conferences, classes, etc.

6. Respect the rights of client/parent and community caregivers and uphold

professional ethics.

7. Maintain a professional liaison with Ministry representatives.

8. Provide for parent/public education and awareness of Supported Child

Development issues.

9. Participate in the ongoing development of policies and procedures for

Supported Child Development in consultation with the Supported Child

Development Steering Committee, the Ministry of Children and Family

Development and Sea to Sky Community Services Society.

10. Participate in related community professional meetings.

11. Share in the responsibility for equipment purchase meetings.

12. Plan and/or provide training opportunities for caregivers and parents.

13. Facilitate networking opportunities among parents, child care providers,

professionals and other service providers connected to the childcare field.

C. Administration:

1. Provide statistical information as required by the Ministry of Children and Family

Development and the Supported Child Development Steering Committee.

2. Participate in preparation of authorization budget and monitoring of spending.

3. Participate as a non-voting member of the Supported Child Development

Steering Committee.

4. Assist in hiring of all SCDP program staff in conjunction with the Manager of

Children’s Services

5. Supervise all SCDP program support staff

6. Provide scheduling of staff to meet children’s and centres’ needs.

7. Participate in program and staff evaluation.

8. Participate in relevant in-service training programs offered by Sea to Sky

Community Services Society.

9. Other related duties as required.

Plan with a matching contribution by SSCS.
