MANUFACTURING DESIGN ENGINEER
Summary:
The Manufacturing Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of progressive stamp and secondary processing tooling used mainly in blanking and forming operations. This role bridges process engineering, tool design, and project coordination by working closely with internal tool room resources (Tool & Die Makers and Machinists) as well as managing outsourced tooling projects with external tool shops. The successful candidate will ensure tooling programs are delivered on time, within budget, and meet quality, safety, and production requirements.
Job Description:
Tooling Design & Engineering
- Design and develop progressive stamp tooling for blanking and forming processes using sound mechanical engineering principles.
- Interpret product drawings, specifications, and process requirements to develop robust and manufacturable tooling concepts.
- Support die layout development, strip progression, and forming sequences to optimize quality, productivity, and tool life.
- Review tooling designs for manufacturability, maintenance, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
Tooling Development & Coordination
- Coordinate tooling development and build activities within the facility’s tool room, working directly with Tool & Die Makers and Machinists.
- Develop and manage tooling build plans, schedules, and milestones.
- Provide technical support during tool build, tryout, debug, and production launch phases.
- Assist with troubleshooting tooling and process issues during production runs.
Outsourced Tooling Management
- Coordinate tooling projects with external tool shops, acting as the primary technical and project contact.
- Prepare RFQs, review quotes, and support supplier selection in collaboration with purchasing and management.
- Review supplier designs, provide feedback, and approve concepts to ensure alignment with internal standards.
- Track project status, timelines, and risks, ensuring tooling is delivered to specification and schedule.
Project Coordination & Continuous Improvement
- Manage multiple tooling projects concurrently, balancing priorities and resources.
- Document tooling standards, lessons learned, and best practices.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling performance, uptime, cost, and quality.
- Participate in cross-functional teams involving engineering, production, quality, and maintenance.
Job Qualifications:Minimum Requirements:
- Mechanical Engineering Technologist diploma or equivalent education with excellent technical and mechanical aptitude.
- Experience with progressive die tooling, including blanking and forming processes.
- Practical understanding of metal stamping operations in a manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of standard stamping presses, coil handling, and feed and straighten systems.
- Experience working directly with Trades People, in particular Tool & Die Makers and Machinists.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
- 3-D CAD, preferable in Solidworks, and CAM competency required
- Computer skills on common word processing and spreadsheet programs would be an asset
- Self-starter with good verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational and project coordination skills, committed to meeting Project completion deadlines, including the need to work extra hours as required
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Collaborative mindset with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong sense of self-improvement and desire for knowledge
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Detail-oriented with a focus on quality and continuous improvement
