Objective:
To contribute to the continued growth and technical leadership of GIP's Construction Materials division by leading the research, development, evaluation, and implementation of innovative construction materials and technologies.
The incumbent will oversee the development, optimization, validation, and commercialization of construction materials including Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA), Cold Mix Asphalt, recycled materials, and future concrete and related construction products. The position is responsible for managing laboratory and field research programs, supervising product performance testing, supporting operations, and ensuring products meet customer, regulatory, and performance requirements.
The role will work closely with Operations, Quality, Production, Construction, suppliers, customers, and industry partners to deliver innovative products that improve quality, sustainability, constructability, and profitability
Responsibilities:
- Lead the research, development, evaluation, and commercialization of new Construction Materials products and technologies, including asphalt, concrete, PGAC or other products to be produced by GIP Paving.
- Manage and supervise product performance testing programs within the Construction Materials Performance Laboratory, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality laboratory operations.
- Develop, optimize, and validate construction materials through laboratory, plant, and field trials to support successful implementation across GIP operations.
- Provide technical leadership and support to Quality, Production, Construction, and Operations teams by troubleshooting material, production, and performance-related issues.
- Evaluate emerging materials, additives, recycled materials, and sustainable technologies to improve product performance, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
- Develop and maintain product specifications, testing procedures, technical documentation, and quality standards in compliance with applicable industry and agency requirements.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, suppliers, customers, consultants, and industry organizations to support innovation, product development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Conduct forensic investigations, analyze laboratory and field performance data, and provide technical recommendations for product improvements and corrective actions.
- Monitor industry trends, research, and regulatory changes to identify opportunities for innovation and maintain GIP's leadership in Construction Materials technology.
Qualification Profile:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is considered an asset.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in construction materials, asphalt technology, product development, or applied research.
- Strong knowledge of construction materials including asphalt mixtures, aggregates, recycled materials, performance testing, and pavement materials.
- Experience with laboratory management, research, and product commercialization.
- Experience interpreting performance testing including Hamburg Wheel Tracking, IDEAL-CT, TSR, Dynamic Modulus, SCB, APA, or similar performance tests is considered an asset.
- Excellent analytical, communication, technical writing, and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives.
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to GIP operations as required.
