Underground Foreman – Civil Construction

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Underground Foreman to lead field crews in the installation of underground utilities, including water, sanitary, and storm systems.
This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for directing daily site activities, coordinating crews and equipment, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification. The ideal candidate is a strong leader who understands underground construction inside and out and can drive productivity while maintaining high-quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and supervise underground utility crews in day-to-day operations
Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials to meet production targets
Install water, sanitary, and storm systems to line and grade
Read and interpret drawings, grades, and specifications
Work closely with Superintendents and Project Managers on scheduling and execution
Ensure proper trenching, shoring, and safe excavation practices
Oversee bedding, pipe installation, backfill, and compaction activities
Monitor productivity and adjust crew activities to maintain efficiency
Complete daily reports, track quantities, and document site progress
Identify and resolve site issues proactively
Enforce and promote a strong safety culture on all job sites
Coordinate with inspectors, consultants, and other trades as required
Qualifications & Experience
5–10+ years of experience in underground civil construction
Proven experience as a Foreman or Lead Hand on underground crews
Strong knowledge of:
Water, storm, and sanitary installation
Deep utilities and trenching practices
Bedding, backfill, and compaction requirements
Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings and grades
Experience working with laser and/or GPS grade systems
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Experience with municipal and commercial development projects
Valid driver’s license (Class 5 required; Class 3 considered an asset)
