Who We Are: Ktunaxa Kinbasket Child & Family Services (KKCFSS) is a non-profit Indigenous Child and Family Service Agency governed by a Board of Directors represented by ʔakisqnuk, ʔaqam, yaqan nuʔkiy (Lower Kootenay Band), yaqit ʔa·knuqⱡiʾit (Tobacco Plains Band), Shuswap Band and the Métis Nation BC. KKCFSS programs and services are available to Ktunaxa citizens, First Nations, Métis and Inuit living on and off-reserve in Ktunaxa ʔamakʔis (Traditional Territory).

The Opportunity: We are looking for a compassionate, dedicated professional to step into the role of Kinship Care Social Worker. This position plays a key role in supporting children and youth placed in alternate care, particularly kinship care, through the recruitment, training and support of kinship caregivers.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will help ensure children in care experience safety, belonging and connection to family, community and culture, while contributing to permanency planning, monitoring placements, and supporting cultural continuity for children in care.
In the Role as Kinship Care Social Worker, You Will:
- Recruit, assess and support kinship and alternate caregivers in collaboration with the care team.
- Conduct home studies and caregiver suitability assessments.
- Enter into agreements with caregivers for the provision of care, in accordance with relevant legislation and standards.
- Monitor placements to ensure the safety and well-being of children and youth, including regular home visits.
- Support caregivers in navigating available services, training and cultural resources.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners, including families, health and education professionals and Indigenous communities.
- Participate in permanency planning and care team meetings for children and youth.
- Assist caregivers in maintaining cultural, familial and community connections for children.
- Maintain accurate and timely case documentation in accordance with legislation and policy.
- Stay current on child welfare legislation, agency standards and best practices in kinship and alternate care.
- Advocate for the needs and rights of Indigenous children, youth and families within the system.
- Represent KKCFSS in meetings and inter-agency collaborations.
What You Will Bring to the Role:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Social Work or in Child & Youth Care OR
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field OR Bachelor’s Degree with a Major/Honors in a Human Services field OR Master’s level graduate Certificate/Diploma in a Human Services field AFTER the completion of an unrelated Bachelor’s Degree.
- Eligible for full C3 delegation under the Child, Family and Community Service Act.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience working with families at risk or in alternate care settings.
- Experience with Specialized Homes and Support Service (SHSS) preferable.
- Human Services fields include: Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology or Nursing.
- NOTE: If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). You must provide a comprehensive report and the supplemental report to be considered.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of Indigenous culture, history, and community dynamics
- Understanding of ethical decision-making and resolving ethical dilemmas in practice.
- Strong understanding of child development, trauma-informed practice and Indigenous approaches to caregiving.
- Effective communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to engage respectfully with families, elders and communities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within inter-disciplinary teams.
- High level of discretion and confidentiality.
- Computer skills for Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Proficiency in using records management systems and relevant software.
- Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.
