OUR MISSION
A Taste of Learning (ATOL) is a neurodiverse, relationship-based learning programme located in Nanaimo, BC. We support children, youth, and young adults through experiential, community-based, and trauma-informed learning opportunities that honour the whole person.
Our programmes are rooted in compassion, safety, co-regulation, inclusion, movement, creativity, outdoor learning, life skills, and meaningful connection. We believe learning happens everywhere — in forests, community spaces, farms, beaches, libraries, science centres, kitchens, art studios, and through authentic relationships.
We are currently seeking compassionate, grounded, energetic, and reliable Support Workers/Educators to join our growing team.
Position Overview
Support Workers at ATOL work closely alongside neurodiverse learners in both 1:1 and small group settings. This role involves supporting regulation, communication, safety, emotional wellbeing, life skills, community engagement, and learning through hands-on experiences.
No two days look the same. Our team supports learners through:
- Community outings and field trips
- Outdoor education and nature-based learning
- Sensory and movement-based activities
- Social-emotional development
- Creative and experiential learning opportunities
- Functional academics and life skills
- Relationship building and co-regulation
This position requires individuals who are adaptable, emotionally aware, collaborative, physically active, and able to remain calm and supportive during moments of dysregulation.

- Are able to maintain professionalism and confidentiality
- Are open to learning and receiving mentorship
Experience supporting individuals with autism, ADHD, anxiety, PDA profiles, developmental disabilities, trauma, sensory processing differences, or complex behaviours is considered an asset.
Responsibilities
- Support learner safety, emotional wellbeing, and engagement
- Build trusting and respectful relationships with learners
- Support communication using verbal language, visuals, AAC, and modeling
- Assist learners with routines, transitions, self-care, and community participation
- Participate in outdoor learning and physical activities
- Support emotional regulation using trauma-informed and neuroaffirming approaches
- Collaborate with team members and families professionally
- Complete basic daily documentation and communication
- Maintain awareness of learner-specific safety plans and support strategies
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience working with neurodiverse children/youth
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence and reliable transportation
- Current First Aid/CPR certification
- Criminal Record Check
Students and individuals with relevant lived or practical experience are also encouraged to apply.

Competitive hourly wage based on experience and qualifications.
