Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Network Operations Supervisors, the
Traveling Network Operations Technician is responsible for the installation, repair, testing, maintenance, and monitoring of equipment and facilities related to Tbaytel products and services within Tbaytel’s serving territory including Thunder Bay and all regional markets. The Travelling Network Operations Technician is end-to-end solution oriented and driven to provide a superior customer experience.
Major Responsibilities
- Installs, maintains, tests, repairs, and monitors network and customer premise equipment related to voice, internet, video, mobility and security services.
- Installs, maintains, tests, repairs, and monitors central office power equipment including, but not limited to DC power plants, batteries and cabling.
- Installs and maintains central office equipment including, but not limited to auxiliary framing, cable rack, fiber tray, and equipment cabinets.
- Installs, tests and repairs copper & fiber facilities.
- Performs and interprets diagnostic testing using hardware and software test tools to isolate network and customer troubles.
- Assists with investigation and diagnosis of issues related to network and customer premise equipment and performs escalation of issues to other groups as required.
- Creates, updates, and resolves network incident and customer trouble tickets, ensuring trouble resolution and customer communication is completed.
- Provides and updates as-built information to maintain records and drawings. Liaises with Engineering on work order revisions, construction status, design improvements, quality control and cost savings.
- Plans and coordinates scheduled work with approved contractors pertaining, but not limited to tower, electrical, road, grounds, building and commercial services installation and/or maintenance.
- Provides training and technical assistance to other employees as directed.
- Operates various types of power tools and telecommunications equipment.
- Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of and complies with all legislation and Tbaytel policies relevant to the position and the duties performed.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A completed degree or diploma in Electrical or Electronics, or equivalent from a University or College; or a demonstrated equivalent combination of post-secondary education, knowledge, and experience coupled with an active CCNA or JNCIA certification;
- Strong computer skills and a technical aptitude; and
- The ability to communicate with the public and fellow employees in a courteous and tactful manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous telecommunications experience in a technical role.
- Active JNCIA or CCNA certification.
Conditions of Employment
- Must successfully undergo a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
- Must hold and maintain a valid class G Driver’s License and current satisfactory Driver’s Abstract (determined by COTB Fleet).
- Capable of performing demanding physical labour, including lifting 100+ pounds occasionally with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50+ pounds.
- Must not be colour-blind. Must be able to accurately differentiate colored wiring.
- Able to work at heights, climb and work freely on poles, ladders, and aerial mobile equipment.
- Must maintain a residence in Thunder Bay, and maintain the continued ability to travel and complete the duties of the job throughout Tbaytel’s entire serving territory, including both Thunder Bay and regional markets (travelling will require overnight stays at the work locations).
- Standby could be required while travelling in the Tbaytel serving territory.
- Work shift work/stand by shift as required.
Additional Information
Hours of work will consist of a schedule of seven (7) consecutive working days, followed by 7 consecutive days of rest. Each rotation will begin on the Monday and end on the Sunday. Hours of work will be 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Hours are based on the Eastern Time Zone.
Shift rotations and duration of shifts may change based on the needs of the Company. The Company will provide a thirty work-day notice for all shift rotation changes.

A Criminal Records Check is a CRC which searches the National repository for criminal records in Canada via the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC). It also identifies pending criminal code charges and outstanding warrants.
