Your Impact at LAURIN
As an Estimator, you will take a leading role in developing accurate, competitive estimates for complex ICI construction projects across Calgary and the surrounding region. You’ll work closely with preconstruction, operations, trade partners, consultants, and clients to evaluate opportunities, manage risk, strengthen bid strategy, and position LAURIN for successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed, accurate estimates in line with company standards, including quantity takeoffs, self-perform work, and selected subcontractor scopes.
- Review project documents thoroughly to analyze scope, technical requirements, and subcontractor needs.
Identify project risks and opportunities, providing strategies to improve competitiveness and value.
- Prepare preliminary project construction schedules using input from subcontractors and internal teams to accurately price time-related activities.
- Deliver preconstruction services, including cost plans, preliminary budgets, and value engineering proposals.
- Actively solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all scope areas.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with trade partners, consultants, and clients to strengthen Laurin’s market presence.
- Maintain and continuously update databases of labor rates, material pricing, and project cost histories.
- Determine general expenses and contribute to decisions on fees and margins.
- Prepare summaries of key issues and actively participate in estimate review meetings.
- Lead or participate in bid closings, ensuring all submissions are accurate, timely, and competitive.
- Support post-tender activities, including clarifications, submissions, and negotiations.
- Identify new project leads through relationships with clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
- Leverage deep understanding of the Ottawa construction market to secure strategic opportunities.
Qualifications
- +5 years of hands-on estimating experience, ideally in ICI construction with exposure to various project delivery methods.
- Experience with civil or infrastructure projects considered a strong asset.
- Previous Secret level security clearance is preferred
- Strong knowledge of estimating techniques, tendering processes, and contract negotiation.
- Proficiency with estimating software such as PlanSwift or On-Screen Takeoff, as well as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plans, and specifications
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Collaborative team player with a positive, professional attitude.
- Adaptable and calm under pressure in fast-paced environments.
Education & Professional Credentials
- Degree or diploma in Construction Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and extensive industry experience.
- Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS), Gold Seal, LEED, or another relevant construction or estimating designation is considered an asset.
Eligibility & Security Requirements
At LAURIN, many of our projects require specific employment and security conditions. To be considered, candidates must:
- Be legally authorized to work in Canada. Please note that LAURIN does not provide or assume sponsorship for work permits or visas.
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance (Secret clearance is considered an asset).
- Successful candidates will be required to provide proof of authorization to work in Canada (e.g., valid work permit or Social Insurance Number). All offers of employment are conditional upon obtaining the required security clearance.
Estimated Compensation
The expected salary range for this role is $90,000 — $120,000, based on experience and qualifications. Final compensation will be confirmed in your personalized offer.
