Course Description/Relevant Employment Duties
This course considers the role of public space and institutions in communicating and commemorating Black history and in fostering ongoing Black freedom struggles in Canada and the diaspora, including through museums, protest art, and historic site tourism. Core texts draw upon key scholarly debates in African Diaspora Studies and Media Studies. Topics may include Underground Railroad in Canada, #WetheNorth, BLM, Republic of New Afrika's "Free the Land" campaign in the US South, and reparations organizing at the UN.
Three hours; one term
Required Qualifications
Professional and educational background in the field, plus experience in classroom teaching. Applicants should have a PhD or be near completion of a PhD in Communication Studies or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous teaching experience in communication or media studies/arts is preferred.
