The team consists of designers and drafters specialized in exterior and interior residential design and project coordinators specialized in zoning, permits and conservation – all under one roof in our office located in downtown Hamilton, Ontario. This amazing team and the internal processes that we are constantly refining enable us to provide our clients with a hassle-free experience in designing their dream home.
Role Overview
We are seeking a talented Designer to work with our Architectural Team in our downtown Hamilton office. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication, have a natural ability to design beautiful spaces, a keen eye for detail and the ability to collaborate with an epic team on the execution of our design projects. This role will report to the Creative Director.
Responsibilities
- Lead clients through the initial design phase, gathering project goals, understanding their vision, and translating their ideas into thoughtful design concepts.
- Develop conceptual floor plans, 3D models, and exterior design studies that reflect client objectives, site conditions, zoning requirements, and smpl design principles.
- Create compelling design presentations, including visualizations, renderings, and material concepts, to communicate design intent.
- Collaborate with internal teams to refine concepts and incorporate feedback throughout the design process.
- Research emerging design trends, innovative materials, and industry developments to continually elevate smpl’s design approach.
- Apply smpl’s project roadmap, standards, and processes to ensure a consistent client experience and high-quality design outcomes.
- Balance creative exploration with practical considerations, including constructability, budget, building requirements, and client priorities.
- Maintain organized project files, documentation, and communication throughout the design phase.
Qualifications
- Passion for progressive, unique modern design and a desire to create thoughtfully designed architecture.
- Completion of a post-secondary program in Architectural Technology, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in high-end residential design and concept development.
- A design portfolio demonstrating creativity, design sensitivity, and the ability to develop distinctive residential concepts.
- Proven ability to translate ideas into clear design concepts and compelling visual presentations.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, as well as Rhino, SketchUp, or other 3D modelling software.
- Experience creating exterior renderings using D5.
- Ability to create design presentations and client facing visual materials.
- Knowledge of North American residential design standards, building codes, building science principles, construction methodologies, and material applications.
- Understanding of residential layouts, proportions, materiality, detailing, and the relationship between design intent and constructability.
- Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to consider client goals, site conditions, and project constraints.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to collaborate with clients, builders, consultants, and internal teams.
- Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback in a collaborative environment.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team.
- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
Pay: $70,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
