BG Excavating is seeking a hands-on Financial Controller to take ownership of the company’s finance function. This is a newly created role established to support the continued growth of the business and to help build a dedicated financial structure. Working closely with ownership, the Controller will manage day-to-day accounting operations, oversee cash flow, and support project financials, while helping to bring structure and consistency to the company’s financial processes. This is an on-site role in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
Salary Range: $80,000 – $85,000/year
Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Own the full accounting function for BG Excavating, including month-end and year-end processes.
- Prepare financial statements and maintain accurate, reliable financial records.
- Manage payroll, benefits, and coordination with external accountants.
Cash Flow & Operations
- Manage day-to-day cash flow, aligning incoming payments with outgoing obligations.
- Oversee accounts payable and receivable, including collections and payment scheduling.
- Work directly with suppliers and subcontractors to manage payment timing and maintain strong relationships.
Project Accounting
- Support job costing, progress billings, and project-related financial tracking.
- Monitor project performance and maintain accurate WIP reporting.
Process Improvement & Controls
- Support the development of financial processes and improve overall structure and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with tax, remittances, and regulatory requirements.
Business Partnership
- Work closely with ownership to provide financial insight and support decision-making.
- Operate with a high level of autonomy, identifying issues and recommending practical solutions.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a construction environment.
- CPA designation is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and project-based financials.
- Experience managing full-cycle accounting, including AP/AR, payroll, and month-end close.
- Comfortable working in a hands-on role with a high level of autonomy and accountability.
- Ability to operate independently, prioritize effectively, and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work directly with suppliers, project teams, and ownership.
- Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Practical, solutions-oriented mindset with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
