Senior Azure Data Engineer
Location: Edmonton, Alberta (Remote within Canada with occasional onsite meetings)

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:15 AM – 4:30 PM Alberta Time
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Azure Data Engineer to support a large-scale digital transformation initiative focused on modernizing regulatory and enterprise data platforms. This role will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable cloud-based data solutions that enable analytics, reporting, regulatory oversight, compliance monitoring, and data-driven decision-making.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing enterprise data pipelines, integrating data from multiple systems, implementing governance controls, and delivering trusted, analytics-ready datasets. This position requires deep expertise in Microsoft Azure data technologies, modern data engineering practices, and cloud-based data architecture.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada; however, the selected candidate must be available to attend occasional onsite meetings in Edmonton, Alberta as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable, secure, and high-performance data architectures on Microsoft Azure.
- Develop and maintain data ingestion, transformation, and integration pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, and Azure Synapse Analytics.
- Build and manage enterprise data lake solutions using Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2.
- Integrate data from enterprise applications, APIs, geospatial systems, and other structured and unstructured data sources.
- Design and maintain robust data models, semantic layers, and analytics-ready datasets.
- Develop and optimize ETL/ELT workflows using Python and SQL.
- Perform data cleansing, enrichment, transformation, validation, and quality assurance activities.
- Design and expose secure data services and APIs using Azure API Management.
- Implement and maintain data governance standards, metadata management, lineage tracking, and data quality controls.
- Ensure compliance with privacy, security, and regulatory requirements through role-based access controls, encryption, and data protection mechanisms.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize data pipelines to ensure reliability, scalability, and performance.
- Utilize automation and AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering efficiency, testing, monitoring, and documentation.
- Collaborate with architects, developers, analysts, and business stakeholders to deliver high-value data products and solutions.
- Support ongoing modernization initiatives and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale data engineering solutions on Microsoft Azure.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Azure Data Factory (ADF)
- Azure Databricks
- Azure Synapse Analytics
- Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 (ADLS Gen2)
- Azure API Management
- Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Experience developing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and data integration solutions.
- Strong understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and cloud data architecture.
- Experience integrating data from APIs, enterprise applications, and diverse source systems.
- Experience implementing data governance, metadata management, data lineage, and data quality frameworks.
- Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with geospatial or GIS-related data environments.
- Experience supporting government, regulatory, environmental, or public-sector initiatives.
- Knowledge of privacy and compliance frameworks such as FOIP, GDPR, or similar regulations.
- Experience supporting advanced analytics, machine learning, or AI-driven data initiatives.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud automation technologies.
Pay: $71.57-$89.46 per hour
