The Peace River School Division is seeking applications for a Full-Time (1.0f.t.e.) Maintenance Repairman VI with Plumbing and Gas Certification at our Central Operations Building in Grimshaw, Alberta. This position will commence on June 15, 2026 or a mutually agreed upon date. This is a Union position under CUPE Employees, Local 4839 Peace River Support Staff.
Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Repairman VI (Journeyman Plumber/Gas Fitter “A” Class ) performs journeyman-level work in the design, construction, repair, and maintenance of plumbing, heating, and drainage systems across division facilities. This position requires advanced technical expertise and authorization to work on and fire any division-owned gas appliance with a rating of 400,000 BTU or greater. In addition to specialized trade duties, the journeyman may perform or assist with general maintenance and repairman work as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.
Skills and Qualifications
The Maintenance Repairman VI (Journeyman Plumber/Gas Fitter "A" Class) is a highly skilled and safety-conscious tradesperson with advanced knowledge of plumbing, heating, and gas systems. They must demonstrate expertise in the installation, operation, and maintenance of high-capacity gas appliances and mechanical systems. A valid Alberta Journeyman Plumber certificate and Class "A" Gas Fitter certification are required, along with extensive experience in the commercial or institutional mechanical maintenance. Those pursuing a Class "A" certification may be considered.
Plumbing, Heating, and Gas Systems
- Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing, heating, and drainage systems in accordance with applicable codes.
- Maintains fixtures, appliances, and mechanical equipment across division facilities.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs gas-supplied appliances and systems rated 400,000 BTU or greater.
- Assembles, installs, and tests valves, fittings, etc.
- Installs and maintains pumps, water treatment, and heating controls.
- Ensures systems are properly sized, aligned, supported, and compliant with environmental and safety standards.
Construction and Project Work
- Participates in new construction, renovations, and retrofits involving plumbing, heating, and gas systems.
- Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications to plan and execute work.
- Prepares accurate material lists and estimates.
- Assists with pricing, ordering, estimating, warehousing, and project planning.
Maintenance and Facility Support
- Performs or assists with general maintenance and repairman duties across division facilities as assigned.
- Supports other trades and contractors in completing cross-disciplinary projects.
- Maintains preventative maintenance records and documentation.
Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Ensures all installations, repairs, and maintenance meet Alberta Building, Plumbing, and Gas Codes.
- Follows Alberta OHS legislation and PRSD safety policies.
- Reports hazards, incidents, and near misses promptly.
- Maintains a clean, organized, and safe worksite.
- Conducts building and safety inspections as required.
Teamwork and Administration
- Provides direction and mentorship to apprentices and casual staff.
- Coordinates and collaborates with other trades and contractors.
- Completes daily labor, materials, and inspection reports accurately.
- Adheres to division policies and promotes a professional, safety-focused work culture.
Requirements:
- Provide an acceptable current Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check (dated within six (6) months of application).

Rate of Pay: dependent on certification and years of experience and will be in accordance with the collective agreement between the CUPE Local 4839 and the Peace River School Division.
