SMT Production Technologist

THE ROLE:
The SMT Production Technologist is responsible for operating, maintaining and troubleshooting the Surface Mount Technology production line for electronic assemblies. The role ensures efficient, high-quality PCB manufacturing by monitoring, performing set ups, inspecting output, and resolving process issues.
Other tasks include managing segments of the ERP system, and quality checks to ongoing builds. Work is performed under the general direction of the Manufacturing Supervisor and is reviewed daily. Strong attention to detail and consistently high quality workmanship are required.
COMPENSATION:
The salary range for this role is $31 - $36 per hour, though actual compensation may vary based on factors such as experience and qualifications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
SMT line operation
- Operates SMT equipment such as screen printer, pick and place machine, reflow oven, AOI/SPI, X-Ray.
- Performs daily machine set up, shutdown and changeovers.
- Loads feeders, solder paste, stencils and components according to run sheets and BoMs.
- Monitors line performance and adjust machine parameters when needed
Set up and calibration
- Sets up and calibrate screen printers, feeders and placement machines.
- Verifies correct component placement programs and ensure alignment.
- Ensures reflow oven profiles match required specifications for different PCB assemblies.
Quality Control
- Inspects boards visually and using AOI/ SPI systems.
- Identifies soldering defects.
- Ensures compliance with IPC standards and internal quality guidelines.
- Reports quality issues and collaborate with engineering / QA teams for corrective actions.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
- Diagnoses and resolve SMT machine errors, feeder issues and placement problems.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance on SMT machines.
- Replaces work nozzles, belts, filters, sensors and other machine parts.
- Escalates complex issues to supervisor when needed.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintains production logs, defect records and downtime reports.
- Updates work instructions and assist in process improvement documentation.
- Tracks and manage component inventory for SMT lines.
- Ensures safety and compliance at all times.
- Follows ESD protection procedures and manufacturing safety guidelines.
- Maintains clean, organized workstations according to 5S principles.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Exercises care and prescribed precautions in the handling and storage of materials and products and prepares adequate records for quality
- Controls further processing or delivery of nonconforming product until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
- Documents all production and test activities as required and assists in the maintenance of assembly, test, and configuration management records.
- Identifies and records any product quality problem.
- Initiates action to prevent the occurrence of product nonconformity and to improve the product and processes.
- Verifies the implementation of corrective action.
- Miscellaneous duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- B. Diploma or degree in Electronics, Mechatronics, Engineering Technology or related field.
- IPC certification is considered an asset.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a SMT assembly environment, operating SMT equipment such as screen printer, pick and place machine, reflow oven, AOI/SPI, X-Ray.
- Ability to read PCB layouts, Gerber files and assembly drawings.
- Commitment to high standards of workmanship and attention to detail.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Knowledge of soldering processes, reflow profiling and IPC-610 standards.
- General knowledge of production techniques, standards, quality control principles and practices.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a high-energy environment with minimum supervision.
- Valid passport and authorization (visa) required to travel to customer locations.
- Security clearance may be required, depending on project assignments and client requirements.
