Mishka Social Services is a Hamilton-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting newcomers, immigrants, refugees, and racialized communities. Through culturally responsive programs, settlement support, and community resources, we help individuals navigate the challenges of settling in Canada with confidence and dignity.
Position Overview
The Mishka Social Services Board of Directors is the organization's governing body. It oversees the organization's activities and ensures that it operates in accordance with its mission, values, and goals. A Board Member has a fiduciary responsibility to act in the organization's best interests and must participate in developing and implementing the organization's strategic plan, ensuring it aligns with the organization's mission, values, and goals. They also play an active role in promoting the organization in the community and must work to build relationships with key interest-holders.
We are seeking a committed and experienced professional with a background in Human Resources and people management. The successful candidate will play a key governance role in supporting the organization’s strategic direction, with a focus on human resources, organizational culture, and people management practices. This individual will provide guidance on HR policies, talent development, and organizational effectiveness while contributing to overall board leadership and responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend regular (monthly) and ad hoc Board meetings – Meetings are mostly virtual, with 2 in-person meetings annually in the Hamilton area.
- Participate actively in Board meetings and strategic planning initiatives
- Uphold fiduciary duties and governance responsibilities as a Board member
- Promote Mishka Social Services among the community and interest-holders
- Provide guidance on HR strategy, policies, and best practices
- Support the development and review of HR policies, procedures, and compliance

- Advise on recruitment, retention, and succession planning strategies
- Contribute to performance management frameworks and organizational
- development
- Support a positive, inclusive, and equitable workplace culture
- Assist with risk management related to human capital
- Serve on committees or working groups as needed
Qualifications
- Professional experience in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or
- related field
- Knowledge of HR practices, employment standards, and workplace legislation
- Strategic thinking and leadership capabilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Prior nonprofit experience is an asset
- Prior executive, governance, or board experience is an asset
- HR designation (e.g., CHRP, CHRL, or equivalent) is an asset
Time Commitment
A time commitment of 1 hour weekly, on average, for time to review material and executive responsibilities listed above.
