Fontaine Site Services is hiring full-time Groundmen to join our civil construction crew. Our projects are located throughout Greater Vancouver and the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. We specialize in commercial excavation, underground utilities, earthworks, shoring, and site preparation. Experience in civil construction is required.
Position Overview
As a Groundman, you will work directly with equipment operators, pipe layers, and site foremen. Your primary responsibility is to support active excavation and underground utility work by performing ground-level tasks essential to safe and efficient operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Spot for excavators, loaders, and trucks using proper hand signals and radio communication
- Assist with trenching, shoring setup, pipe installation, and backfilling
- Measure grades using lasers, grade rods, and levels under the direction of the pipe layer or foreman
- Hand dig around utilities and assist with utility locates
- Rig and hook buckets, pipes, plates, and attachments safely
- Place and compact bedding and backfill with jumping jacks or plate tampers
- Maintain safe exclusion zones around heavy equipment
- Set up and maintain traffic control devices (cones, delineators, signage)
- Perform general labour duties including shoveling, raking, site prep, and cleanup
- Operate small tools such as cut-off saws, compactors, and jackhammers
- Follow all site-specific safety protocols and WorkSafeBC requirements
Qualifications
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in civil construction, utilities, or excavation
- Strong understanding of safe work practices around heavy equipment and underground utilities
- Ability to read grades or willingness to learn quickly
- Physically capable of lifting, shoveling, and working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation
- Tickets such as First Aid, Fall Protection, CSTS, Ground Disturbance, Confined Space, or Rigging are assets
- Skid steer or excavator experience is an asset
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
- Reliable, punctual, safety-conscious, and able to work well within a team
Compensation and Benefits
Starting hourly wage is based on experience and demonstrated ability. Overtime is available. After three months of employment, employees are eligible for extended health and dental benefits.
