The Role: Sheet Metal Estimator
In this specialized technical position, you are the critical bridge between engineering, manufacturing, and the customer. You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of project cost analysis, ensuring that custom-engineered solutions are both financially viable and technically executable. This role is perfect for a seasoned pro who understands that a great estimate accounts for both the shop floor and the field.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Technical Bid Analysis: Review complex engineering drawings, specifications, and CAD models to define project scope and technical requirements.
- Comprehensive Costing: Calculate total costs by determining material needs, production hours for custom fabrication (laser cutting, forming, welding), and specialized installation labor.
- Installation Planning: Account for field-specific factors such as site access, scheduling, and strict compliance with customer and local building codes.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Management: Solicit and negotiate quotes from material suppliers and specialty sub-trades to ensure competitive pricing and profit margins.
- Risk Assessment: Identify potential project roadblocks, such as material price fluctuations or complex installation requirements, and develop mitigation strategies.
What You Bring to the Table
- Experience: You have a minimum of 5 years of experience in sheet metal estimating and manufacturing within a custom fabrication shop.
- Licensing: You hold a valid Sheet Metal Journeyman License.
- Technical Mastery: Deep understanding of custom fabrication techniques, including CNC punching, brake press forming, and various welding methods.
- Mathematical Precision: High proficiency in mathematics for accurate quantity take-offs and cost modeling.
- Communication: The ability to translate technical data into clear, professional proposals for clients and coordinate seamlessly with internal production teams.
- Problem Solver: You possess independent problem-solving skills and a "can-do" mindset when faced with complex technical challenges.
