Reporting to the Executive Director, Public Health, the Director of Health Promotion is a key member of the Public Health leadership team whose mandate is to lead initiatives focused on promoting and protecting the health of Nova Scotians.
The incumbent provides strategic leadership, direction, guidance and project management for health promotion strategy. This includes investment prioritization, risk planning, and outcome monitoring. They lead and direct a team that provides evidence-based research, policy analysis, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation of a range of health promotion programs, policies, and services that are responsive to the changing needs of Nova Scotians and are aligned with the overall strategic vision and priorities of the Department. This work takes place in accordance with DHW’s legislated responsibilities under the Health Protection Act which requires close collaboration with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other government departments and health partners with shared responsibilities in health promotion.
The Director works collaboratively across the Department, government, and the health system on key initiatives to advance strategy, planning, reporting, performance monitoring, and accountability.
- Strategic leadership, direction, guidance and project management for health promotion strategy including policy, programs, and services that promote health, reduce health inequities, and prevent disease and injury.
- Investment prioritization, risk planning, and outcome monitoring for the Public Health system.
- Engagement and collaboration across the Department, government, and the health system.
- Contribution to national policies, guidelines, programs and initiatives by representing Nova Scotia on F/P/T committees related to issues of health protection.
- Team leadership.
The ideal candidate has experience in a senior level position where they were responsible for managing a team and moving forward significant pieces of work for their organization.

- Experience working with health systems, with direct experience in Public Health a significant asset.
- Masters Level Degree completed or presently enrolled to be completed within 2 years in a related health or social science field.
- Several years of progressive leadership experience with accountabilities for financial, strategic and people management.
- Equivalent experience and/or alternative education may be considered.
- Excellent leadership, organization and decision-making skills.
- Expert knowledge to critically analyze evidence-based practices to inform strategy development and organizational planning.
- Experience in leading change in a complex environment and the ability to move forward new initiatives and overcome ongoing challenges.
- Evidence-based, collaborative problem solving of complex, multifaceted issues.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, communications and team building skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively, build rapport with senior leaders across all levels, and to inspire creativity and motivate people and teams. Demonstrated collaboration, negotiation, and persuasion skills are required.

Pay Grade: EC 13
Salary Range: $3,918.14 - $4,897.66 Bi-Weekly
