MDS Coating is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to fill the role of Research Scientist – Advanced Coatings.

Position Summary
MDS Coating is currently looking for a Scientist to join our Research & Development team. The successful candidate will be responsible for understanding the relationship between the microscale structure of materials and their macroscale physical and chemical properties, and applying this knowledge to develop, improve, and customize advanced coating systems and materials.
This role focuses on thin-film erosion and corrosion-resistant coatings, gas turbine engine materials, and surface engineering technologies. The Scientist will lead and support experimental programs, materials characterization activities, and collaborative research projects with academic and industry partners.
The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, production, quality, and business development teams to advance new technologies from concept through implementation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, lead, and execute scientific experiments related to coating development, materials performance, and surface technologies.
- Utilize advanced characterization and analysis techniques such as SEM, metallography, nanoindentation, and other materials characterization methods.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data to support product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop advanced knowledge of materials science, deposition equipment physics, and thin-film coating technologies.
- Identify, evaluate, and integrate scientific and technological advancements into new and existing products and services.
- Lead and support academic and industry partnerships to advance research objectives.
- Contribute to technical presentations, patents, and intellectual property development activities.
- Maintain and support advanced characterization equipment, including development of operating procedures and training materials.
- Contribute to lessons learned, technical documentation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives across the organization.
- Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement projects and technical problem-solving activities.

What we are looking for:
Required Qualifications
- Master's, or PhD degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of metallic and ceramic materials.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
- Experience with materials characterization techniques and experimental design.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills
- Sound knowledge of Statistics in particular time series capability evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with thin-film deposition technologies, particularly Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).
- Experience with protective coating systems.
- Experience in the aerospace, gas turbine, or advanced manufacturing sectors.
- Experience working in a quality-assurance regulated environment.
- Experience with erosion, corrosion and high temperature testing
- Experience leading collaborative research projects with academic or industrial partners.

Pay: $75,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
