The City of Oshawa Recreation Services Branch offers seasonal and year-round part-time opportunities to help us run the wide variety of programs that are offered for all ages & staff our outstanding facilities.
We are currently looking for Program Leaders to support our following programs:
- Preschool Instructors - Plan, organize, lead and supervise non-formal but structured recreation preschool programs.
- Sports Instructors - Plan, organize, lead and supervise non-formal but structured recreation programs for preschool, child/youth and adults.
- Youth Drop-in Programs - Plan, organize, lead and supervise non-formal but structured recreation youth programs to youth drop-in centres/rooms and gymnasiums.
In addition to providing equitable and inclusive customer service that supports the City of Oshawa core values of Authenticity, Courage, and Trust, your responsibilities may include:
- Open and close program space
- Setup and takedown program equipment
- Prepare, organize and lead recreational opportunities for assigned age group (i.e. preschool, child/youth, adults)
- Provide skill development opportunities to participants when required
- Perform administrative tasks as applicable (i.e. prepare and organize program equipment and supplies, guide program volunteers, keep accurate participant attendance records)
- Monitor participant safety
- Administer first aid as required
- Complete Public Accident/Incident Reports or Complaint/Enquiry Forms as required and report to a Program Coordinator
- Enforce City of Oshawa policies and procedures, including but not limited to: admission requirement standards, emergency procedures (eg. fire plan)
- Perform safety checks of equipment prior to being used
- Supervise and enforce rules
Requirements
- Appropriate skills/knowledge for position
- Possess a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment as well as to work independently as required
- Possess and keep current Standard First Aid/CPR ‘C’ qualifications
- Provide own safety equipment as required for position (eg. CAS approved hockey helmet, appropriate footwear)
- Demonstrate good customer service and communication skills to deal effectively and courteously with staff and the general public; good interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
- Attend all staff trainings and meetings
- Ability to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
Preschool Instructor Requirements
- Minimum Grade 11 education
- 3 years’ experience participating/volunteering in a related field
- 1 year experience teaching/instructing participants ages 18 months to 5 years
Sports Instructor Requirements
- Minimum Grade 11 education
- 3 years’ experience participating in a related sport or field
- 1 year experience teaching/instructing in a related sport or field
Youth Drop-in Programs Requirements
- Enrolled in College Youth focused disciplines, i.e. Social Work/Teaching
- 1 year experience volunteering or working in youth leadership, youth centres and/or in youth program roles
