Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Director of Finance to join our leadership team and oversee the financial operations of the business.
This is a hands-on senior finance role suited for someone with strong construction finance experience who understands the pace, complexity, and financial demands of a General Contractor environment. The successful candidate will support financial operations across multiple related entities, including BUILD IT Mississauga, BUILD IT Calgary, and Maintain It, while partnering closely with ownership, operations, project teams, vendors, subcontractors, clients, banks, auditors, and other external stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will bring strong financial leadership, sound business judgment, excellent communication skills, and a professional, collaborative approach to supporting the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the company’s finance and accounting function, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll oversight, and general accounting operations.
- Oversee construction finance processes, including project accounting, job costing, progress billing, vendor and subcontractor payments, client invoicing, holdbacks, statutory declarations, Work-in-Progress reporting, and project profitability tracking.
- Review and manage financial requirements under construction contracts, including CCDC contracts, payment terms, change orders, lien-related documentation, and compliance requirements.
- Manage project accounting workflows and financial reporting within Viewpoint, ensuring accurate and timely visibility into project costs, billings, commitments, and profitability.
- Partner closely with ownership, operations, project management, estimating, and construction teams to provide financial insights, analyze budget variances, manage risk, and support business decision-making.
- Act as a key financial liaison with clients, vendors, subcontractors, banks, auditors, insurance providers, and other external stakeholders, resolving billing, payment, and contract-related matters professionally.
- Lead, mentor, and support the finance/accounting team by establishing clear expectations, processes, accountability, and a service-oriented finance culture.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, controls, reporting, systems, and communication between finance and operations.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in a Director of Finance, Controller, or equivalent senior finance leadership role.
- Minimum 5+ years of dedicated corporate finance, project finance, or construction finance experience within a General Contractor environment.
- Experience supporting financial operations across multiple related entities or business units, including regional operations and affiliated companies.
- Strong understanding of construction finance, project accounting, job costing, progress billing, holdbacks, change orders, subcontractor/vendor payments, Work-in-Progress reporting, and cash flow management.
- Hands-on experience with construction contracts, including CCDC contracts, contract billing terms, statutory declarations, holdbacks, and related documentation.
- Hands-on experience with Viewpoint or any other construction ERP.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with vendors, subcontractors, clients, project teams, and senior leadership.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, project-driven construction environment with multiple competing priorities.
- Ability to travel to the Calgary office on a quarterly basis, as required.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- High level of integrity, accountability, discretion, and business judgment.
- CPA designation is preferred.
This is a replacement position to support continuity within the Finance function.
