Job description
Kit Steel is looking for an experienced machine operator to join our rebar fabrication team in Welland.
The primary focus of this position will be operating our rebar shearline—cutting reinforcing steel accurately, efficiently and safely according to production tags and bar lists. This is an important production role for someone who understands machinery, pays attention to detail and takes pride in keeping work moving through the shop.
Direct experience operating a rebar shearline is strongly preferred. However, we are also interested in experienced machine operators from steel-processing, metal-fabrication or other industrial environments whose skills could transfer successfully into rebar production.
This is not an entry-level general-labour position. We are looking for someone who can become a dependable owner of their machine and work area, recognize problems before they become downtime and consistently produce accurate work.
What you’ll do
- Set up and operate the rebar shearline to cut material according to production tags and bar lists
- Confirm bar size, length, quantity and job information before production
- Maintain a steady production pace while ensuring cuts are accurate
- Organize and feed stock lengths efficiently while working to minimize unnecessary scrap
- Inspect finished material and ensure bundles are properly counted, tagged and prepared for the next production stage
- Coordinate with crane operators and material handlers to maintain an orderly flow of material
- Perform routine machine checks and identify potential mechanical or maintenance issues
- Report equipment problems promptly and clearly to the appropriate supervisor
- Maintain a clean, organized and safe machine area
- Assist with other rebar fabrication equipment and shop duties when required
- Cross-train on benders, overhead cranes, forklifts and other production equipment where appropriate
What we’re looking for
- Previous experience operating a rebar shearline is strongly preferred
- Experience operating industrial cutting, shearing, sawing or steel-processing machinery will also be considered
- Ability to read and follow production tags, bar lists, cut lists or similar work instructions
- Strong measurement and basic math skills
- Good mechanical awareness and the ability to recognize when equipment is not operating properly
- Experience handling long, heavy steel or similar materials
- Strong attention to detail and pride in producing accurate work
- Ability to work safely in a fast-paced, deadline-driven shop
- Dependable attendance and the ability to work independently once trained
- Forklift or overhead-crane experience is an asset
- Rebar fabrication or reinforcing-steel experience is a major asset
