Overview
The Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and support of oilfield completion tools used in well completion and production operations. This includes tools deployed in high-pressure, high-temperature, and corrosive downhole environments.
This role requires advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and a strong understanding of mechanical design, materials selection, and manufacturing processes. The engineer will deliver robust, reliable designs that meet customer requirements and industry standards, while also ensuring manufacturability, testability, and field performance.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design & Development
- Design and develop completion tools such as:
- Packers (mechanical, hydraulic, swellable)
- Sliding sleeves and flow control devices
- Liner hanger systems
- Setting tools and associated completion hardware
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings using SolidWorks
- Ensure designs meet functional requirements for sealing, load transfer, pressure containment, and deployment
- Perform tolerance stack-ups and ensure proper fit, form, and function
SolidWorks Modeling & Documentation
- Develop parametric models and complex assemblies in SolidWorks
- Generate detailed manufacturing drawings with GD&T, surface finish, and material specifications
- Manage revisions and maintain design integrity through PDM or document control systems
- Develop and maintain standard components, configurations, and design libraries
Engineering Analysis & Validation
- Perform or support engineering analyses, including:
- Stress, fatigue, and load case evaluations
- Pressure and sealing integrity calculations
- Thermal effects in HPHT environments
- Support design validation through prototype builds and qualification testing
- Analyze test data and field performance to refine and improve designs
Material Selection & Environmental Design
- Select appropriate materials for completion tool applications, including:
- High-strength alloy steels
- Corrosion-resistant alloys (Inconel, Monel, duplex/super duplex stainless steels)
- Elastomers and sealing materials for downhole environments
- Design for challenging conditions:
- High pressure / high temperature (HPHT)
- Sour service (H₂S) per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156
- Corrosion, erosion, and wear
Manufacturing & Cross-Functional Support
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are efficient and producible
- Support CNC machining process development, including:
- Complex geometries and tight tolerances
- Material-specific machining considerations
- Provide input on and support additive manufacturing applications where applicable
- Review and disposition design-related non-conformances (NCRs)
- Support assembly, fit-up, and first article builds
Testing & Field Support
- Develop and support testing of completion tools, including:
- Pressure testing and seal validation
- Functional testing and cycling
- Load testing and qualification testing
- Interpret test results and recommend design improvements
- Provide engineering support during tool testing, troubleshooting, and failure investigations
Standards & Compliance
- Design in accordance with:
- API standards (as applicable to completion tools)
- ASME, ASTM, and material specifications
- Customer-specific requirements
- Ensure all designs meet quality, safety, and documentation requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 3–8+ years of mechanical design experience in oilfield equipment
- Direct experience designing completion tools strongly preferred
- Proven professional experience using SolidWorks
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, including:
- Complex part and assembly modeling
- Drawing creation with GD&T
- Configurations and design tables
- (Preferred) SolidWorks Simulation and PDM
- Strong understanding of:
- Mechanical design and failure modes
- Sealing systems and pressure-containing components
- Materials and heat treatment
- Working knowledge of:
- CNC machining processes and constraints
- Additive manufacturing principles and applications
- Testing methods for downhole tools
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with:
- CNC machining processes and shop interaction
- Additive manufacturing for prototyping or production components
- Design and execution of tool testing and validation programs
- Familiarity with:
- Elastomer and sealing design for downhole applications
- HPHT and sour service environments
- Experience working in API Q1 / ISO 9001 quality systems
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- High attention to detail and engineering rigor
- Effective communication across engineering, manufacturing, and testing teams
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Work Environment
- Office-based design role with frequent interaction in shop and test environments
- Regular involvement in assembly, testing, and troubleshooting activities
- Exposure to manufacturing operations and test facilities
