Job Summary
Under the direction supervision of the Director of Human Resources, the Human Resources Generalist is responsible for providing comprehensive human resources support across the organization. The Human Resources Generalist assists with recruitment and onboarding, employee relations, performance management, policy administration, labour relations, health and safety, compensation and benefits administration, and HR reporting. The role serves as a key resource for employees and managers, ensuring human resources programs, policies, and practices are effectively implemented and compliant with applicable legislation and organizational standards.
As the department continues to evolve, responsibilities may be adjusted to meet operational requirements.
Responsibilities
· Oversee the maintenance of accurate physical and digital employee records and personnel files and ensure employee files are complete and compliant.
· Maintain the Human Resources Information System (HRIS) and ensure employee data is accurate, complete, and up to date.
· Support the creation of HR documents, announcements, forms and bulletins using approved format.
· Assist with HR audits and support the preparation of HR reports, metrics, workforce data, training records, and seniority lists.
· Support payroll administration, benefits enrollment, and employee status changes.
· Respond to employee and management inquiries regarding HR policies, procedures, and programs.
· Coordinate full-cycle recruitment activities, including posting vacancies, screening applicants, scheduling interviews, participating in interviews, conducting reference checks, and preparing employment offers using approved template.
· Partner with hiring managers to support recruitment, staffing, and workforce planning needs.
· Support in preparation and regularly review of recruitment materials, including job descriptions, job postings, and interview questions.
· Maintain recruitment records and track recruitment metrics.
· Oversee and support the full-cycle of onboarding sessions and orientation programs to ensure a positive employee experience.
· Support employee retention initiatives and workforce planning activities.
· Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of HR policies, procedures, and practices.
· Ensure policies are communicated effectively and applied consistently across the organization.
· Monitor compliance with employment standards, human rights legislation, privacy requirements, and other applicable laws.
· Assist with audits and compliance reviews.
· Coordinate performance review processes, including probationary and annual evaluations.
· Provide guidance to managers and employees regarding performance management procedures.
· Assist in identifying employee training and development needs.
· Coordinate training programs and maintain training records.
· Support employee engagement, recognition, and continuous learning initiatives.
· Provide support to employees and managers regarding workplace concerns and HR-related matters.
· Assist in resolving employee relations issues through coaching, mediation, conflict resolution and policy interpretation.
· Support in workplace investigations and prepare related documentation.
· Support grievance management, collective agreement administration, and labour relations activities.
· Assist with collective bargaining preparation and implementation as required.
· Support administration of employee benefit programs and assist employees with benefit-related inquiries.
· Assist with compensation reviews, market benchmarking, salary administration, and job evaluation processes.
· Track employee leave status and accommodations in accordance with organizational policies, applicable collective agreement, and legislation.
· Support compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and organizational standards.
· Assist in the development, implementation, and communication of occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
· Maintain records related to workplace incidents, investigations, and corrective actions.
· Coordinate Joint Health and Safety Committee activities, meetings, and required training.
· Promote workplace wellness, psychological health and safety, respectful workplace practices, and employee well-being initiatives.
Perform other related duties.
Qualifications
· Diploma or Degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Industrial Relations, or a related field.
· Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation or working toward designation is considered an asset.
· Minimum of 3 years experiences in a HR Generalist or HR Advisor role, preferably in a unionized non-profit or social services organization.
· Experience working with HRIS.
· Experience working with Indigenous communities or within an Indigenous organization considered a strong asset.
· Experience in supporting workplace investigations and preparing reports is an asset.
· An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Understanding of Indigenous cultures, values, and community engagement principles.
- Knowledge of human resources principles, employment legislation, labour relations, and best practices.
- Knowledge of collective agreements and unionized work environments.
· Excellent verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and legislation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with managers, employees, unions, and external stakeholders.
- Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and HR information systems.
