We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Physical Education & Wellness Teacher who is passionate about helping children develop physical literacy, healthy lifestyles, sportsmanship, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for movement.
Position Summary
The Physical Education & Wellness Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging physical education programming for students from Casa through Grade 6. The successful candidate will create a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment that promotes physical literacy, coordination, teamwork, leadership, wellness, and personal growth.
While Montessori experience is highly valued, we welcome candidates from educational, coaching, kinesiology, recreation, athletic, and wellness backgrounds who are excited to learn and support Montessori principles.
The ideal candidate understands child-centered learning and can foster independence, respect, self-confidence, and a love of movement in every child.
Key Responsibilities
Physical Education Programming
- Plan and deliver engaging physical education lessons for students from Casa through Grade 6.
- Teach age-appropriate movement skills, physical literacy, fitness, coordination, balance, and teamwork.
- Foster a positive attitude toward physical activity, wellness, and healthy living.
- Adapt activities to meet varying developmental needs and abilities.
- Encourage participation, inclusion, sportsmanship, and personal achievement.
- Promote confidence, perseverance, leadership, and healthy risk-taking through movement-based activities.
Wellness & Healthy Living
- Promote healthy lifestyle habits and overall wellness.
- Incorporate age-appropriate discussions and activities related to health, mindfulness, self-regulation, and emotional well-being.
- Support students in developing healthy habits that contribute to lifelong physical and mental wellness.
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment where all students feel successful and supported.
Student Development
- Support the physical, emotional, and social development of students.
- Help children build confidence, resilience, self-discipline, and leadership skills through movement and sport.
- Encourage independence and self-regulation consistent with Montessori principles.
- Create opportunities for cooperative learning and positive peer interactions.
- Observe student progress and communicate relevant observations to classroom educators and administration.
Program Development
- Develop engaging seasonal and annual physical education plans.
- Organize Sports Day, wellness events, movement challenges, and other enrichment activities.
- Introduce a variety of activities, including:
- Team sports
- Individual sports
- Fitness and conditioning
- Cooperative games
- Outdoor education
- Movement and coordination activities
- Mindfulness and wellness practices
- Collaborate with classroom educators to support the holistic development of students.
Health & Safety
- Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with school policies.
- Inspect equipment regularly and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive learning environment.
- Follow all emergency procedures and supervision requirements.
- Support accommodations for students with varying abilities and needs.
Collaboration & School Community
- Work collaboratively with educators, administration, and families.
- Participate in staff meetings and school events as required.
- Contribute positively to the culture and values of the school community.
- Serve as a positive role model through professionalism, enthusiasm, and healthy lifestyle practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Degree or Diploma in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, Health & Physical Education, Sport Management, or a related field.
- Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing is required.
- Experience teaching, coaching, instructing, or leading physical activity programs for children.
- Strong understanding of child development and age-appropriate physical activity programming.
- Excellent classroom management and group facilitation skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR-C Certification.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Check.
Preferred
- Montessori Diploma (Casa and/or Elementary) from a MACTE-accredited institution.
- Previous experience working in a Montessori school environment.
- Experience teaching students from Kindergarten through Grade 6.
- Experience organizing sports programs, wellness initiatives, outdoor education programs, or extracurricular activities.
- Additional certifications in coaching, fitness instruction, yoga, mindfulness, outdoor education, or related disciplines.
Montessori Experience
Montessori training is considered a strong asset; however, candidates without Montessori credentials are encouraged to apply if they demonstrate a genuine interest in Montessori education and a willingness to learn and support Montessori principles.
