Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and patient-focused Orthopaedic Technician to join our growing clinical team. This hands-on role combines technical expertise in casting, splinting, wound care, and orthopaedic bracing with patient education and clinical support.
Working closely with Orthopaedic Surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers, you will play an integral role in delivering exceptional patient care by providing expert casting, bracing, and patient education to support optimal recovery and functional outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Bracing, Casting & Clinical Care
- Apply, remove, and adjust casts, splints, immobilizers, and other orthopaedic devices as directed by the treating provider.
- Assist Orthopaedic Surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers with in-clinic orthopaedic procedures, as appropriate within scope of practice.
- Perform basic wound care, dressing changes, and other delegated clinical procedures within scope of practice.
- Assess, fit, and modify a wide range of orthopaedic braces and supports, including knee, ankle/foot, wrist/hand, elbow, shoulder, and other orthoses, to ensure appropriate fit, comfort, and function.
- Educate patients on the proper use, care, wear schedule, and expected outcomes of casts, braces, and other orthopaedic devices, reinforcing post-procedure instructions as required.
- Document clinical care, brace fittings, patient education, and related treatment activities accurately in the EMR.
2. Clinical Bracing & Product Expertise
- Serve as the clinic's orthopaedic bracing specialist, providing expert guidance to patients on the appropriate use of orthopaedic support devices.
- Explain brace options, features, benefits, and insurance coverage in a clear, ethical, and patient-centred manner.
- Collaborate with Orthopaedic Surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers to ensure bracing recommendations align with prescribed treatment plans and established clinical protocols.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of orthopaedic bracing products, vendors, and emerging technologies.
- Monitor product utilization trends and recommend improvements to optimize product selection, inventory utilization, and patient access to appropriate orthopaedic supports.
3. Inventory, Documentation & Operational Excellence
- Maintain inventory of orthopaedic braces and clinical supplies, including ordering, receiving, tracking, and reconciliation.
- Coordinate with vendors regarding inventory, product availability, and special orders.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of orthopaedic devices dispensed, patient education provided, inventory utilization, and follow-up requirements within the EMR.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance clinic workflows and patient experience.
- Maintain compliance with infection prevention, safety, and clinic policies.
Qualifications
- Certificate or diploma in Orthopaedic Technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant clinical experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with casting, splinting, and orthopaedic bracing.
- Experience working in an orthopaedic, sports medicine, or musculoskeletal clinical environment.
- Strong understanding of orthopaedic anatomy and common musculoskeletal conditions.
- Ability to educate patients on orthopaedic treatment products, proper device use, and expected outcomes.
- Proficient using electronic medical records (EMRs) for clinical documentation.
- Excellent patient communication and education skills.
- Excellent manual dexterity with strong attention to detail and clinical accuracy.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume clinic environment.
