Summary
The Drafting Technologist supports the estimating and project planning process by preparing logistics drawings, crane studies, material takeoffs, and other technical documentation required for bidding and preconstruction activities. Working closely with estimators, engineers, project managers, and operations teams, this role develops accurate and practical construction solutions that support project planning, constructability reviews, and execution strategies. This position plays a key role in ensuring accurate planning, efficient resource utilization, and successful project delivery while supporting compliance with applicable industry standards, including AISC requirements and structural steel construction best practices.
Key Areas

Create logistics drawings and detailed plans to support construction operations

Perform manual or model-based takeoffs to determine material quantities accurately

Develop crane plans and conduct crane checks to optimize efficiency and safety

Assist the estimation team during bidding by reviewing documents and verifying logistics

Conduct model checks using Tekla and work with New York City Department of Buildings (NYC DOB) drawings

Actively participate in production, going beyond coordination to contribute hands-on

Perform additional duties as required based on project needs
Qualifications

3–7 years of experience in structural steel detailing (commercial, industrial, or heavy structural preferred).

Proficiency in AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, SDS/2, or equivalent detailing/drafting software.

Working knowledge of AISC, AWS, and standard steel fabrication practices.

Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.

Understanding of fabrication and erection processes and how they impact detailing.

Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Working Conditions
Environment

Primarily office-based in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Occasional visits to fabrication shops or construction sites to support coordination and constructability.
Physical Requirements

Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers for computer work, and communicate via phone and email.

Occasional walking through shop or jobsite environments, including standing, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, and wearing PPE (steel-toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, etc.).

Compensation
The compensation range for this role is $48,000 – $70,000 per year. The actual compensation offered will be based on skills, experience, and internal equity, and will fall within this range.
Work Experience
Canadian work experience is not a requirement for this position. Candidates will be assessed based on their skills, qualifications, and overall experience.
