Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Registered Pharmacy Technician to join our healthcare team. The Registered Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the technical aspects of prescription preparation and dispensing in accordance with the standards of the BC pharmacy regulator and applicable legislation. Working collaboratively with pharmacists and pharmacy assistants, the Pharmacy Technician ensures accurate, safe, and efficient dispensing while maintaining high standards of patient safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Prescription Processing
- Receive and process prescriptions.
- Enter prescription information accurately into the pharmacy management system.
- Verify patient demographic and medication information.
- Resolve technical discrepancies before pharmacist review.
Prescription Preparation
- Prepare, package, and label medications accurately.
- Count, measure, compound, and package medications according to established procedures.
- Select the correct drug, strength, dosage form, and quantity.
- Prepare compliance packaging and blister packs.
Final Technical Check
- Perform the final technical check of prescriptions, where permitted, ensuring:
- Correct patient
- Correct medication
- Correct strength
- Correct dosage form
- Correct quantity
- Accurate labeling
- Appropriate packaging
- Refer all clinical questions and therapeutic decisions to the pharmacist.
Inventory Management
- Order medications and pharmacy supplies.
- Monitor inventory levels.
- Rotate stock and remove expired medications.
- Manage recalls and drug shortages.
- Receive and reconcile pharmaceutical shipments.
Controlled Drug Management
- Maintain records for narcotics, controlled drugs, and targeted substances.
- Ensure secure storage and accurate documentation.
- Assist with inventory reconciliation and audits.
Compounding
- Prepare non-sterile compounded medications following established procedures.
- Maintain compounding documentation.
- Clean and maintain compounding equipment and work areas.
Quality Assurance
- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
- Report and document medication incidents and near misses.
- Maintain accurate records required by regulatory standards.
- Assist with pharmacy audits and inspections.
Patient Service
- Provide courteous customer service.
- Collect patient information.
- Explain prescription pick-up procedures.
- Direct patients requiring clinical advice to the pharmacist.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
Administrative Duties
- Process insurance claims.
- Assist with third-party billing issues.
- Maintain patient profiles.
- Answer telephone inquiries within scope of practice.
- File prescriptions and required records.
Health and Safety
- Maintain a clean and organized dispensary.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Comply with occupational health and safety policies.
- Safely handle hazardous medications where applicable.
Qualifications
- Registration as a Pharmacy Technician in British Columbia.
- Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician program.
- Good standing with the provincial pharmacy regulator.
- Current CPR certification (preferred).
- BC Driver's Licence

Scope of Practice
The Registered Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the technical components of dispensing and medication preparation. Clinical assessment, therapeutic decisions, patient counselling, prescription adaptation, prescribing, and clinical judgment remain the responsibility of the pharmacist.
