The role is open to people in and around Calgary and Edmonton, AB, as the work is completed at job sites around these areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise all aspects of substation construction, maintenance, and commissioning activities on site, ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
- Lead and mentor a team of technicians, electricians, and subcontractors, providing clear direction, performance feedback, and training.
- Oversee daily site operations including equipment installation, cabling, grounding, switchgear, transformers, and control systems.
- Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, Alberta OHS regulations, and company safety policies; conduct regular safety meetings and hazard assessments.
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and project management teams to resolve technical issues and ensure design specifications are met.
- Perform quality control inspections and testing of substation components to verify compliance with client and regulatory standards (e.g., AESO, AUC requirements).
- Manage site documentation, daily reports, as-built drawings, and commissioning records.
- Monitor project schedules, resource allocation, and material deliveries to proactively address delays.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and utility providers.
- Participate in project planning, risk assessments, and post-project reviews.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- 7+ years of progressive experience in electrical substation construction, maintenance, or operations, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
- Strong technical knowledge of high-voltage substations (69kV to 240kV preferred), including transformers, circuit breakers, protection & control systems, and SCADA.
- Valid Alberta Journeyman Electrician ticket or equivalent Red Seal certification is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with experience managing multidisciplinary teams in a construction or utility environment.
- Thorough understanding of Alberta safety regulations (OHS Code), Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and utility standards.
- Proven ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record; willingness to travel to project sites in Alberta.
- Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems, or a related field is an asset.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions and at heights as required.
