EDUC 5202 Curriculum and Pedagogy in Senior Biology
An introduction to curriculum and pedagogy in biology for the Senior Divisions, with an emphasis on content, process, and methods. Pedagogical practices and theoretical perspectives in biology are explored, including culturally relevant curriculum; relating science to technology, society, and the environment (STSE); developing skills, strategies and habits of mind required for scientific inquiry; and understanding concepts, relevance, and application of biological sciences, with a goal of enhancing global scientific literacy. Emphasis is placed on curriculum and pedagogies that effectively incorporate equity, diversity, inclusivity, and decolonization (EDID). (1.0 credit)
EDUC 5241 Curriculum and Pedagogy in Senior Environmental Science
An introduction to curriculum and pedagogy in environmental science for the Senior Divisions, with an emphasis on content, process, and methods. Pedagogical practices and theoretical perspectives in environmental science are explored, including contemporary environmental challenges; the impact of the environment on human health; the reduction and management of waste; and the conservation of energy. The interrelationships between science, technology, society, and the environment (STSE) are explored with a goal of enhancing scientific and environmental literacy. Emphasis is placed on curriculum and pedagogies that effectively incorporate equity, diversity, inclusivity, and decolonization (EDID). (1.0 credit)
The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach the combined course Curriculum and Pedagogy in Senior Biology and Environmental Science. The instructor will support teacher candidates in understanding curriculum expectations, scientific pedagogy, and inclusive practices in science education at the senior level. The course aligns with Ontario Secondary Science Curriculum and reflects assessment practices outlined in Growing Success.
- Prepare and deliver content aligned with the Ontario Curriculum: Science – Biology and Environmental Science (Grades 11–12).
- Support teacher candidates in planning units and lessons that integrate scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and STSE-based instruction.
- Introduce strategies for inclusive classroom instruction that promote equity, diversity, and environmental responsibility.
- Provide guidance on assessment for, as, and of learning, aligned with Growing Success.
- Engage candidates in reflection on their teaching practice and the role of science education in supporting global scientific and environmental literacy.
- Provide timely feedback and evaluate candidate learning based on course expectations.
- Coordinate with the Teacher Education Office or course coordinator as appropriate.
