Job Description
Position Title: Assistant Store Manager
Role: Under the direction of the Store Manager the Assistant Store Manager role is to provide oversight management of the events and daily issues within the store by providing leadership and direction to the store’s team. Duties may include: staff training, for all departments within the store provide coverage for breaks, vacation time, and staffing shortages, employee performance management, daily administration, safety, security, cleanliness, facilitating an environment for storewide teamwork, cultivating excellence in customer service, optimizing store efficiency and profitability.
Reports to: Store Management/Human Resources Manager
Responsibilities include:
Time Requirements:
- Full-time hourly position and is scheduled to work on average 30 or more hours in a standard work week.
- Employee is entitled to a 30 minute unpaid meal break for all shifts longer than 5 consecutive hours.
- Must have a flexible working availability - willing to work days, evenings and weekends and assist with shift coverage as needed
Daily Operations
Customer Service
- Proactively engage customers to ensure unparalleled customer service and ensure department team members are doing the same.
- Respond to customer questions and provide assistance or when necessary employ the appropriate department representative to provide assistance.
- Assist customers with product inquiries, share product knowledge and take customers to the location of product directly.
- Assist with customer flow and line-ups through till operation or grocery bagging during times of high customer volumes.
Cash
- Efficiently and accurately process customer transactions through the use of applicable POS functions and carry-out customer purchases.
- Be knowledgeable about and advise customers of current store promotions and programs.
- Keep the till area clean, well-stocked and organized.
- Train department employees on POS operations and provide ongoing support for POS operations ensuring operating procedures are being followed accordingly.
Leadership
- Lead by example in daily activities and strive to improve personal performance each and every day.
- Maintain a positive attitude and approach challenges in a proactive and problem solving manner.
- Direct team members to complete assigned duties and re-direct and/or provide feedback when necessary.
Boost Sales
- Educate team members about new and existing products.
- Communicate sales targets to the team and motivate sales through new and exciting sales tactics.
- Encourage team members to attend product education opportunities.
- All Health First training and quizzes are complete and up to date on a continuous basis.
Receiving
- Assist and coach Department Leads and Clerks on receiving best practices, including verifying shipments and ensuring accurate receiving of the invoice into the computer.
- Manage damaged, poor quality, or mis-shipped products in a timely manner by requesting and following up on credits as necessary.
Human Resources
- Assist with recruitment of new hires.
- Assist with performance management of in-store staff.
- Attend monthly L10 meetings with the Human Resources Manager to identify training needs of the store.
- Responsible for overseeing training efforts of all in-store staff.
- Be a resource for staff regarding store wide communications and clarification for any policy and procedure protocol.
Inventory Control
- Collaborate with the Store Manager to ensure inventory levels recorded in the database system match the physical inventory on shelf and in back stock.
- Assist Store Manager by running reports as scheduled and follow-up accordingly.
Promotions/Seasonal Events
- Assist Store Manager with preparations for Customer Appreciation Days (CAD) and Taste the Savings Days (TTS).
- Assist Category Managers with putting out promo batches, set up and take down of end cap promotions, including seasonal promotions.
Store Maintenance
- Co-coordinate the maintenance of store structures and equipment in a timely and proactive manner.
- For large cost repairs consult with the Store Manager and Senior Management Team regarding quotes for repairs.
- Ensure all areas, including tills, back stock, shipping area are kept well organized, tidy, and clear of obstructions.
Qualifications and Attributes:
- Excellent communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team
- Have supervisory experience in a retail environment
- Education and training in nutrition, herbology, homeopathy, and/or related industry experience
- Knowledge of organic and natural foods industry
- Intermediate computer skills with an emphasis in database operation
- Ability to follow instructions and procedures
- Ability to work with a flexible attitude in an dynamic environment
- Ability to think independently, prioritize, and complete projects in a timely manner
- Excellent organization and interpersonal skills
Basic Physical Requirements
- Stand for extended periods of time. Walk, bend and twist your body, reach above and below shoulders.
- Use of mops, brooms, cleaning products, knives, box cutters, carts, computers and printers.
- Use ladders of varying heights up to 12 feet.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs maximum.
- Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and typing.
- Environmental exposure to extreme temperatures in coolers, freezers, and outdoors.
