Automation & Controls Engineer, Accelerator Operations

On behalf of our client, Iotron Medical, we are currently recruiting for an Automation & Controls Engineer, Accelerator Operations, based in Saskatoon. This role combines industrial automation design with hands-on machinery operation. In this role, you will develop, debug, and implement control systems for manufacturing or medical equipment while also serving as a primary operator for a Linear Accelerator (LINAC) system, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient production processes.
As the Automation & Controls Engineer, Accelerator Operations, you will:
- Design, program, and support PLC systems using platforms such as Allen-Bradley or Siemens.
- Create and modify HMI screens for equipment operation and monitoring.
- Assist with electrical schematics, panel design, and automation documentation using AutoCAD or similar software.
- Troubleshoot and debug automated equipment to improve performance and reduce downtime.
- Support startup, testing, commissioning, and optimization of machinery and control systems.
- Operate and monitor the Linear Accelerator (LINAC) system following established operating and safety procedures.
- Implement AI/ML to improve accelerator maintenance, beam optimization, and isotope production, and analyze complex data sets to improve isotope yield.
- Perform routine startup, shutdown, and safety checks on the LINAC equipment.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and coordinate corrective actions when required.
- Maintain accurate operational records, logs, and technical documentation.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, production, and maintenance teams on continuous improvement initiatives.
You and Your Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or a related discipline.
- 3-5 years of experience, including internships, co-op placements, or academic project work.
- Exposure to PLC programming platforms such as Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 or Siemens TIA Portal.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar electrical drawing software.
- Understanding of sensors, actuators, electrical wiring, and industrial automation systems and strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- High attention to detail with a strong focus on safety and quality.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Eagerness to learn new technologies and develop technical expertise.

About Iotron Medical SK Corp:
Iotron Medical SK Corp is a leading manufacturer of critical medical radioisotopes for nuclear medicine applications. Their lead product is copper-67, a beta-emitting therapeutic isotope being utilized across North America and Europe. Copper-67 serves as an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) in therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals in both clinical and preclinical research. At present, at least two companies are conducting human studies using this isotope. Iotron is also developing the capability to produce other radionuclides for clinical applications.
