Position Overview:
As an advanced Healthcare Security Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining a safe and secure environment within the Emergency Department (ED). This position requires strong situational awareness, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to effectively manage high-stress situations while providing outstanding customer service. You will work closely with healthcare professionals, patients, visitors, law enforcement, and emergency responders to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone within the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor the Mental Health Unit and provide a visible security presence throughout the facility.
- Manage and respond to aggressive, disruptive, or threatening behavior from patients and visitors using professional verbal de-escalation techniques.
- Assist clinical staff with patients or visitors exhibiting abusive, threatening, or violent behavior.
- Provide interim patient watch coverage for aggressive, abusive, threatening, fall-risk, or flight-risk patients as requested by clinical staff.
- Complete detailed, accurate reports in a timely manner when required.
- Supervise and support patient watch personnel within the Emergency Department.
- Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies and emergency services when required.
- Ensure the safety and security of staff, patients, visitors, and hospital property.
- Assist hospital staff with patient restraints in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Enforce hospital policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Prevent theft, violence, and other security-related incidents.
- Verify visitor identification and monitor site access according to hospital protocols.
- Communicate security concerns, suspicious activities, and incidents effectively with dispatch and management teams.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive reports regarding security activities, incidents, violations, and hazards.
Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods of up to 12 hours.
- Ability to walk and patrol the facility for prolonged periods, including the use of stairs.
- Ability to run and respond rapidly to emergency situations and code calls.
- Ability to participate in physical training, including use-of-force and physical restraint techniques.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
- Ability to acquire private security license with Department of Justice
- Clean criminal record
- Must be 19 years of age or older
Professional Qualifications
- Minimum of 3-5 years of security experience required.
- Previous experience in healthcare security, law enforcement, corrections, military, or a related field is preferred.
- Diploma in Justice Studies, Police Foundations, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Nova Scotia Security Guard License.
- Valid Standard or Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C certification.
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills are required.
Required Certifications
- Certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (MOAB) are required for this position.
- Equivalent certifications may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Applicants who do not currently possess acceptable certifications may enroll in Sentry Security's 60-houtr Advanced Healthcare Security Training Program prior to onboarding.
- Sentry security will cover all associated training costs with a minimum six-month commitment to the position and availability requirements.
